I have a Buffalo 1.2 and the 4:1 MUX. The MUX is connected to three S/PDIF inputs: BMC, RCA and the TPA Toslink module. The MUX output is wired to the Buffalo with both S/PDIF and I2S. The MUX works well with my Denon 2930CI on all three inputs with the Buffalo's input configured for I2S input; however, both my Direct TV HD receivers (with digital output) have problems maintaining sync through the MUX inputs with the Buffalo configured for I2S input. The audio will cut out occasionally and the sync light on the Buffalo will drop out during that time. For some reason, the Direct TV HD receivers have no problems with sync through the MUX when the Buffalo is configured for S/PDIF input.
While not required now without the Otto replacement, the inability to use the MUX's I2S output with the Buffalo appears to make it impossible to leave the Buffalo in I2S mode and externally switch between the MUX, Dedicated I2S and Dedicated DSD.
Any idea what could be causing this problem and how to resolve it?

This typically happens because the DAC is much more sensitive to I2S errors than SPDIF errors. You can try running the Buf I with the higher DPLL bandwidth. That may help. Other than that I can only suggest using the SPDIF output from the MUX instead of the I2S.

Thanks Russ,
Setting it to the next higher DPLL bandwidth setting cleared up the problem.

Excellent glad to help. And don't worry any over the DPLL bandwidth. It is still rejecting an incredible amount of jitter.
