Hi Russ, Brian,

I read from a lot of post that you develop a new USB to I2S module which will support 384/32. Is it true? Can you tell us something about this project? When can we buy a kit from you?

Regards,
Kristóf

I am interested in this as well and whether it will be backwards compatible with my Buffalo32?

I think you will find your answers here: http://www.diyaudio.com/...3-tpa-usb-transport.html

Some quotes:
"It will be wired similar to our MUX/Metronome and our other receiver boards.
That is because it is designed to be useful for anything that takes I2S or SPDIF. Not just Buffalo II"

"My goal is to have it done by the end of November. What I mean by done, is that the module will be designed and the PCBs for prototypes will be ordered. It may take a few weeks after that for it to become widely available.
It will all depend very much on how much time I have to devote to it"

"I do not expect them to be shipping before Xmas"

"The module itself will support 32bit (at least for I2S output as SPDIF is inherently limited to 24bit)"

"In all honesty the super high sample rates are *not* my primary design goal. They are something I want but don't require. If it works solidly at 192/24 from USB I will be quite satisfied"

Russ,

Any updates on how your going with the development of this module.

Thanks

Any chance the device can confirm the incoming sample rate from the computer?

Are you worried your computer won't be telling you the truth? ;)

Short answer is that it not a big design priority, so probably not. I am running up against the limit of available I/O on the chip.

Given a default OS sampling rate with the promise of dynamically switching according to what the app requests (which should equal the sample rate of the src file)...it would be nice to see the actual rate out of the USB receiver match the src on disk. So yes, I am worried my computer will lie to me. Liar

Russ, is there any improvement in sound quality in the new USB-module compared to what is currently offered?

I got on the preorder list for the BII, which is supposed to be sent out in week medio febuary. I need a way to interface the BII with the laptop. Should i order the current module or wait?

Edit: At the moment, i only have ripped CD's in FLAC (44.1 kHZ). I do not plan on SACD's right now.

The current USB module have to powered by the computer but the computer's PSU may be delivering dirty power so I would like to see an external power supply option if possible.

That should be easy to do with the USB header that according to Brian will get on the module. But I really doubt it's needed with this module.

I think if the LCDPS could supply power to the new usb module that would be best then you wouldn't need power from the computer transport/motherboard and you could use the motherboard to send only data.

No, it wouldn't. One has to consider the fact that Russ has mention in the past the module will be isolated, and bus powered. Providing power from the device side would also provide means to get noise into your DAC. With power from the PC side and fully isolating the signal, one really gets the best solution possible. Hence my "I doubt it's needed".

How could you isolate the signal more than not having power from the same side? If you get power elsewhere instead of power + data from the PC side but only data from the PC side wouldn't that be better? Doesn't the LCDPS have noise rejection capabilities compared to the switching power supply in your PC also?

You would need to share grounds to provide a common voltage reference. That will be the path for noise.

Hi,

The May 2011 version of the LeonVB Buffalo Integration Guid v1.0.4 on the TPA site states:

"For USB input, an USB Receiver is available. The USB receiver module offers SPDIF and I2S output. There are two versions of the USB receiver: the first generation is based on the Texas Instruments PCM2707 USB DAC chip. This version is limited to 16-bit/48-KHz signals. The latest generation is based on an XMOS controller, and allows up to 32-bit / 384KHz."

I cannot find the Xmos one on the site - is its release is *very* imminent?

That project is on hold for a bit until I adjust to my new job and work schedule.

Sorry, when I wrote that part it was assumed to be available by christmas (2010, not 2011).

Does anyone know the dimensions of the new module?
I want to order one in the near future but I have to take account for the space it will take.

The inside of the casing will be very crowded with my dual mono set-up with Sidecar, S/Pdif, Ventus and a starter module...
Can we assume that the new USB module will have the same measurements as the older one?

Thanks in advance,

Jordo
