After reading the user manual and reading a lot of the threads here and on DIYAudio I am still a little confused about the flexibility of the Ventus.
Can the Ventus be used as the audio section from BuffII converting balanced to SE without legato. Is this a good idea will it sound better than the legato plus buffer/SE converter?

It can, and it will sound just fine(in fact better than fine), you will just have a bit more distortion (mostly 2nd order). And it is really a very tiny bit. You will be running the Buffalo II in voltage mode. This result in about 5-10db increase in THD depending on the actual implementation.

For Ventus I would use 1K R2-R5. You should get very good results. Now if you use Legato in front of it you will get a bit better THD numbers at the cost of more complexity. Who is to say it sounds better? Its really your call.

thanks russ
as usual too many choices.
I have both IVY2 and lagato1 and I am leaning toward the IVY in my system (biamped rebuilt Maggy IIIa's) both sound great better than anything else I have had in my system, I thought I would try the ventus just for grins
