Try a 1 ohm resistor instead of a short. Also use a reasonably good surge suppressor with the Buffalo and also with the other equipment around the house.
For Mr Nakamichi: grounding the DAC circuitry (not just the case) will typically cause ground loops resulting in audible hum. Your transformer center-tap is typically NOT connected to the mains earth/gnd (you can test it with the power off)

Hello glt, no no, the whole Buffalo / Ivy / Placid circuitry is NOT connected to earth ground. But the servo circuitry of the player, in which the Buffalo / Ivy / Placid combo now resides, ist connected to earth via the chassis ground. The player has a bipolar Power supply with center tapped transformer. Buffalo / Ivy / Placid have their own transformer. But reside in the same chassis. I once had a Vincent class A amp, which produced hum when being connected to my Parasound DAC. The reason: The Dac ws the only equipment in the whole stereo with connection to earth ground. The Parasound did not induce hum, but worked as ground for the whole stereo, with the Vincent´s electronics in the way. The problem vanished by only connecting the Parasound to the Vincent or by grounding the whole stereo. Gretz, Nak

I just finished building a Buffalo II, Placid, IVY III combo and notice that when music is playing one of the AVCC LED's are flickering in time to the music. Is this normal or do I need to give it more juice?

It sounds like your Placid output current is set too low.

It turns out the idle noise is not the only problem. With the RL filtering bypassed, the DAC doesn't sound so great either. I'll be trying a 1 ohm resistor in both RC and RL modes and see what happens.
