I was reading Lukas Fikus' (who is a big supporter of TPA and the Buffalo) web site the other day and he was suggesting to up sample SPDIF signal to 96/24 before the DAC using the Behinger SRC24/96. He said he was hearing a much better audio with this combination. Could any explain why this was so and is it worth the $200 bucks for the Bheringer. I was under the impression the Sabre chip did this anyway.

The ES9018 upsamples far beyond 24/96. I cannot speak to the results he is hearing as I have not tried it, but I would personally not bother do it. I guess it comes down th whether the Behinger has a better upsampler than the ESS chip, which I doubt).

Thanks for the reality check, Brian. I had a feeling this was the case. He is a bit enthusiastic about everything. I am on the wait list for the Buffalo 32 to replace my buffalo original

I am feeding my Buffalo from Pure Music which can optionally up-sample ordinary 16 bit 44.1K to 24 bit 192K. (possibly higher but that is the limit of the HiFace usb to SPDIF) The point is that for whatever reason even if not changing the volume the music sounds different. My personal preference for most songs is for 88.2 up-sampling prior to the B2 although some songs sound best using the native sample rate of the source recording.
