I have built up the single placid and it gives 3.30V . ,
i hooked it up to Buffalo 11 and the reading on the Buffalo with the AVCC installed is 1.76 V and won't budge from that reading , the lights on the dacs AVCC and the led's on the dac don't light up , should they light up on the dac and the AVCC ? Anxious
I'm missing something somewhere , any feedback would be welcome . thank you .

I quote from page 2:

i have pushed the placid to dish out 5.5 and the Dac still remains at 1.76 volts , weird ....

Hi Leon
one thing that i had not tried.... and it turned out that .....my wiring from the wall outlet did not correspond with the wiring of the placid and the dac , did the switching and everything is working fine now .
yet , thanks for your input , i can now continue to mount the other components knowing that so far all is working as it should .

i have assembled Legato and left out the buffer components for now ,
expecting to see the Placid BP and corresponding transformers to arrive soon .

My single Placid is powering 4.60V to the Buffalo II Dac , i could power her at 5.5 but you see... the placid is really hot , i mean hot ....you stick a probe on that QP1 and then stick it up a horses ... and he's in the winner's circle in no time , but ...but this transistor in the QP1 will not last long as a regulator due to the high heat ,it get's hotter by the day ,this is not in the 60/70 degree range this is more close to 90 degrees easy , the QN1 is very cold in comparison one would think it was not working . ,

i built the Placid per manual specs but my knowledge of electronics does not permit me to take this any further ,

i don't know where to look to bring down the temperature of that transistor , my knowledge of electronics is very limited , could it be that i am outputting loads of current and no voltage ?... to trouble shoot this problem can someone help

Could you post a picture? It sounds like you have something very wrong happening. If connecting the DAC to the Placid causes the output voltage to drop to 1.76V, it is likely you have killed something somewhere. Where are you measuring the 1.76V?

i can't remember where i got the 1.76 volts , i did so many senarios trying to sync this thing it's unreal .

So here i am restarting the process by going from the manual and putting the VR2 at 100ohms and VR1 at 10 ohms . this now gives me a output reading of 4.66 volts , upon hooking to the DAC the reading goes down to 4.16 volts , although she plays at this voltage the module FJPF1 1943 will still get hotter and hotter .

I think the reading of 1.76 volt was done when i did per manual up to the point where it says adjust the R8 to give out 035 volts readjusted to 5.5 and hooked the dac up and did not play and took the reading on the output of the placid and that is where i got 1.76 volts so readjusted the trimmers till i heard music .....there comes a point where i don't know anything anymore , time for coffee i guess .

That's not the correct procedure. The output terminals should deliver 5.5V, and per manual you should adjust the voltage across R8 to 0.35V. The higher the voltage across R8, the more power you're delivering. If that power isn't used, it's turned into heat. It's a shunted PSU, remember?

Follow the procedure as stated in the manual:
1. You adjust VR1 to 100 ohm and VR2 to 10K.
2. Apply power to the Placid WITHOUT any load, so DON'T connect the DAC.
3. Adjust VR2 until the output at the output terminals is 5.5V
4. Adjust VR1 until the voltage across R8 is 0.35V
5. Power it down
6. Hook up the DAC
7. Apply power and measure the voltage at the output terminals again. It shouldn't be significantly lower than 5.5V.

i have been down that road so many times , but will do it again .

the 1st part went well as usual
the 2nd part went well as usual
the 3th part i adjusted the the output terminals to 5.5V
the 4th part i adjusted the voltage across R8 is 0.35
the 5th part i hook up the DAC and check output voltage , it is now at Eh? 1.7289 .
So there you go that's where i get my 1.72V reading as i mentioned in my earlier post .

So i investigated further and fiddled with my trimpots and noticed that if i turned
the VR2 i get no reaction from the trimpot , Think so i went on to try the VR1 and things start to
happen i dial her up to 4.30V , actually she starts to play at 4.V , to keep heat down on QP1 i only
drive it to 4.30V for safe measure

It sounds like either a) your Placid is failing to deliver the current the Buffalo needs, or b) you Buffalo is damaged. Can you post a picture of the Buffalo, as well the overall setup?

and to mention that both led's on placid shine with high intensity no matter how i turn trimpots , but the dac lights shine according to level of turning trimpots the right light comes to full intensity as soon as power is applied and the left light will increase in intensity as per increased trimming .

Brian's right, it's either of those. I'm a bit puzzled by several things you state:
a. You don't have a Placid BP or transformers yet. You do have a Legato. You do have the DAC working/playing, but what's your setup?
b. You adjust the output to 5.5V but turning VR2 does nothing. That sort of contradicts each other.

First step would be testing VR2. Does the resistance change when you turn the knob? If not, you need to replace it.
Next I would resolder the joints on the Placid. Or have you done that already?

hi Leon
my setup is simply a single placid , the DAC receiving the toslink hooked up to the trans and all going to RCA output to amp , and she sings .
my VR2 cannot be out of order if i can adjust before hooking it up ,the trimming to give me required my 100ohms .

For one thing you cannot use the output of the DAC single ended directly. It will have a huge DC offset.

I will pay special attention if my intentions ever come to try single ended ., wouldn't want to damage my fullrangers .

Thanks for noticing and pointing it out .
I may have corrected the situation today by taking my ground wires from the GND output of the DAC and reinserted them in the (-) of the outputs of the DAC ,
sound improvement was immediate and balanced , the (+)and (GND) is for (SE) , The (+) and (-) indicators is for balanced output .
