10. I2S output
The I2S output provides raw I2S data out of the hiFace Evo on an RJ-45 socket. It has no
galvanic isolation so its ground connection is same as the USB one. Pinout is as follows
(pins are listed from left to right):
2,4,6,8) Ground
1) SDATA
3) LRCK
5) SCLK
7) MCLK
Lines are driven by high-speed, high-current buffers capable of 25mA current drive on
each line.

TTL Level I2S
Make sure the SPDIF switch is open. Connect I2S signals as follows:
Source GND → GND
Source Bit Clock → DCK
Source Word Clock(LRCK) → D1
Source Data → D2


To connect I2S, I did following.

1. SPDIF switch is open on Buffalo II DAC board.

2. RJ45 cable following

RJ45 Buffalo II DAC

pin 1 --------- D2
pin 3 --------- D1
pin 5 --------- DCK
pin 2,4,6 ------ GND
pin 7,8 --------- not connected


But.......... no operation, source LED is light off.
What's the problem?

How long is your cable?
To work it will need to be EXTREMELY short.

About 30cm. EXTREMELY? To operate it, how short the cable is exactly?
Shorter..., 10cm. not operate.

I'm using with volumite. Is it make a problem by different firmware from that of on board?

Or other thing is needed? for example pin-short on Hiface Evo side.

Hi yourland,

I am curious to hear if you have gotten your B-II to work with the I2S feed from the Hiface Evo? If you have, what made the difference, and how good is it sounding? Please report back on your findings as I am intereted in perhaps trying the Evo with my forthcoming B-II.

Can you get it to work via spdif?

i wonder if any other buffalo users are going straight from the hiface into the Buff-II

Spdif is good. Even if its spdif is not work, Buffalo II is useless.

After failure I2S from Evo to Buffalo, googling for hours, I've got a conclusion.

Simple connection with I2S from Evo to Buffalo is unable.
Single ended I2S..not support differential I2S..somebody may find a solution by modification Evo... bla bla bla.
Buffalo II DAC's clock is so great and asynchronous-reclock,there is no solution I2S.

Another story....
I tried with Juli@, CAT.7 cable 50cm, but only I can hear some sound left side in horrible noise.

I received a reply from M2Tech.
"The pinout is refered to the RJ socket on the Evo, not to the RJ plug. So, with reference to the Wikipedia link you sent me, the pin numbers needs to be reversed."

Yes. They described in the manual "RJ Socket" and the pin number is reversed.

Finally, I've got sounds through I2S connection from Evo to Buffalo II DAC. But, heavy noise.
Dingo, you are right. I2S cable length should be extremely short.
Only the connector head is remained. Cable is short enough I think.

Noise is another problem I guess.

I run my Evo, Buffalo II with battery pack rechargable.
PCIE 1x USB card - Evo(12v DC) -(I2S) - BII(5v DC) - (balanced) - Focal Solo6 Be.

How can I remove this noise and get a clean sounds?

Please help.

If a computer interface is what you are looking for, it is likely that the best one for using (or integrating into) the Buffalo II DAC would be the HiFace Evo, using its I2S output to feed the I2S input on the Buffalo (keep the I2S cable very short).
Twisted Pear is working on a new USB interface board that may well compete with the best out there (and reportedly will support sample rates up to 32/384!) but ....

I connect between two device with CAT.7 cable, the length is short as I can.
However, I cannot able to obtain clean sound.
I'll wait above USB interface. very attractive...!

At last, I've got I2S sound with two device.
In Evo case, cause of I2S trouble is not the length of the cable and not needed a special method.
I appeal to the manufacturer this problem and had a faithful service.

Sound quality is another grade, clean and accurate compare with the spdif connection under same condition.
The cable? just old normal bundled in some.. CAT.5, length about 5cm.

CAT.7 2m cut in two 35cm,165cm and both are well done.
The shorter is strong and the longer is smooth relatively to each other.

So how exactly did you solve he problem, just by switching to CAT5?. How long is your connection from the EVO to the Buff?

UTP cabling is not need a special trick.
Normally UTP slot pin number read right to left,
but the pin number on Evo read left to right.( see the evo's manual)
2,4,6,8) Ground,1-SDATA 3-LRCK 5-SCLK 7-MCLK

Source GND → GND,Source Bit Clock → DCK,Source Word Clock(LRCK) → D1,Source Data → D2 (Buffall II manual)

2,4,6 -> GND
1 -> D2
3 -> D1
5 -> DCK
7,8 do not connect

If you got noisy signal as my case, you need M2Tech services.


Cable length? CAT.7-2m is operational(I test it). I am using 35cm.
CAT.5-40cm is well-done, but sound is dull compare with CAT.7.
I recommend CAT.7.
