Hallo again.
I was unable to find documentation on how to connect the USB Receiver the Buffalo (google failed me!). Is this right?
I2S output on USB Receiver to Buffalo II:
GND - GND
LRCK - D1
DCK - BCK
D0 - D2
and I leave the SPDIF switch to the right (closer to the word SPDIF on the Buffalo). |

One more question: can I use the USB receiver as volume control? If not, can I use my favourite music playing software to do so? I've connected my headphones to the IVY III (for now) and am getting a very distorted sound, but with recognisable music. Perhaps this is a problem of some thing other than volume? |

IIRC, in order to use software volume control with the USB module when outputting I2S, you need to connect DO to DI. I've just got back from dinner at the Ale House though, so I may be mistaken. Edited by user Thursday, August 12, 2010 4:52:42 PM(UTC)

Assuming you are correct (and I think that a good assumption, Ale House or otherwise ;-) ) the USB receiver's D0 is connected to the Buffalo's D2. Should I put two wires in to the terminal? |

Brian is correct, but only if you are using the analog output from the USB board. :)
Otherwise you will just need to use software that actually attenuates the digital signal. Foobar is a good example.

Hmmmm. I'm using Linux, so foobar is a no-go. I did try kmix and alsamixer, two volume mixers. With the "USB DAC" at 0, the music was discernable. With the "USB DAC" at 100, there was simply noise. Further, trying attenuation in Amarok, my favourite music player, did much the same. Could there be another problem? The lock light is also not the stablest thing in the world, periodically giving up before coming back. Edit: I am fairly sure that volume is not the problem. There must be some thing I've done wrong: perhaps one of the switches is wrong? Perhaps some thing is not working that I don't know about? There should not be noise with the barely audible music. Edit 2: I tried taking a FLAC file and reducing the amplitude of the wave in Audacity. Even with a peak at -50 dB, the distortion was huge and the volume far too loud. What could cause this? At my wits' end, I did some thing potentially silly. I flipped the SPDIF switch from the right side to the left. And it worked. Glorious sound! One last question: I have connected only the right side's ground to the ground pin on my headphone jack and the left seems a bit weak. Could it be that I should connect both left and right ground to the same ground pin on the jack? Edited by user Thursday, August 12, 2010 10:27:32 PM(UTC)

The grounds are common on the board, so there will not be any difference. Are you using an IVY?

I am indeed. A little later, I'll try attaching it to an amplifier and see if the left is still off.
It is rather strange: on some tracks, the left seems normal, whilst on others, parts slightly or totally absent on the left. |

I tried with the amplifier: the problem is with the head-phone jack.
