Hi,

I'm taking on a BuffaloII as my first DIY project and so far I'm having great fun. I've assembled the DAC, IVYIII, Placid and Placid BP and have a 15VA and a 30VA transformer ready and waiting. I'm planning on building it to be fed with both a toslink module and a USB/SPDIF converter and installing both single-ended and balanced outputs. I might be able to figure it out, but I'm not sure and would rather be safe than sorry. Can anyone help?

fist, thank you for the fast reply

and just let me make this clear

for a normal.... non-exotic build, I need

Buffalo II + Placid $289

also need 9V transformer


IVY III + Placid BP $139

need 15V transformer.


and a volumite + knob

from what I read the ivyIII stage has enough power to drive a headphone effectively, and I am certainly considering going that route, but at the same time

does not want to lose the output capability. so the question is,

Can I directly connect the output of the ivy stage to both headphone jack and output jack without adding additional switches, diodes, etc, right?

also, is the S1A S2A just from on the placid simply the output from the transformers?


reading the forums, I notice that several people have problem with S/PDIF input picking up noise, so I am thinking about adding another toslink module,

how should the toslink module be powered, if needed at all.

and last... I am planning to build this in a clear, acrylic case, since I am famailiar and the material.

but I have seem some people grounded their transformers and boards to the case, is there any caution I should take with the all plastic board? thank you

Hi!

In addition to the modules you have listed, I would recomend that you consider the MUX. It would give you 4 inputs (3 s/pdif + 1 AES/EBU or 4 s/pdif). If you are sure that one input is enough, go for s/pdif directly into the Buffalo. I have built/rebuilt three different DACs several times (probably 12-15 different configurations..) without ever experiencing noise on s/pdif. Just make sure you use shielded cable. If you have an old SCART or VGA cable, of decent quality, you will find several meters of suitable shielded cable inside.
If you go for the MUX or toslink module, you would probably need one more PSU, such as the LCDPS. Connect it to the 9V transformer.

You do not have to ground any of the components to the case. If you choose to use a conductive material, you should connect it to the power receptacles ground pin for safety. An all acrylic case will give less shielding against noise than a metal case, but it will probably not be a problem.

Alright, thank you for the information
I believe one SPDIF input would be suitable for me

I guess I will just build a clear case, and buy some copper mesh just in case there are shielding problem XD

Why are the 15VA secondaries of the 9 V transformer connected in parallel to one single Placid?
To get 30VA / more current?
I will probably have a custom toroid built by a small company, so this would be good to know before
giving the company the correct values...

On a 15VA transformer with 2 identical secondaries, you only get 7.5VA from one set of wires. If you have the wires lying around they're not of much use so you hook them up in parallel. If you have a second PSU to power you could wire them to that one.
P.S. Instead of the custom job, you could also use a couple of R-cores from Selectronic.fr. I recently got some, they're nicely built and shielded. Plus Selectronic ships pretty fast, and for a low fee.
