Hi,
Can't wait for my Buffalo 2 to arrive early July :)
I am having a look at the TOSLINK interface of TPA. This doesn't seem to support bitstream, or am I mistaken?
A PS3 can have a separate audio output, but only via its optical digital output otherwise to an HDMI receiver. I was hoping there would be some way to output DSD (bitstream) to the Buffalo DAC, but this involves handling bitstream over optical and I haven't seen this done by anybody yet, but I am assuming it must be possible for the option to exist on the PS3, and if possible, then there must be some way to get that bitstream to the Sabre DAC!
Otherwise, I guess I could hack the PS3 from some point where the digital signal is still electrical, just the plastic rear panel of the PS3 isn't going to be a breeze to work with. I would like DSD via optical if possible.

The optical output is not DSD, just plain S/PDIF. Part of the HDMI requirements (licensing) is that hires audio is not directly exposed. In order to get it, you have to hack it.

Hi Brian, I understand the licensing requirements issue, but the PS3 menu does state that "bistream" rather than various sample rates of "PCM" can be sent out over the optical SP/DIF connection. The licensing issue you raise relates to hires audio formats over HDMI, not S/PDIF, so no license would be violated by Sony sending their own DSD format over an optical interface.

It would be the only product on the market (that I am aware of) that would let you do that, including Sony DSD players. [EDIT]: I don't think there is even a defined format for sending DSD over a single dataline. DSD consists of separate clock and data lines for each channel. I am willing to bet if you select DSD, you either get a down-sampled S/PDIF output, or nothing out of the TOSLINK connector. Even if there was a way to get DSD out, the TOSLINK would not be nearly fast enough to handle it. Edited by user Thursday, June 17, 2010 5:46:19 AM(UTC)

I've been hunting around the web about this topic and it appears the PS3 will output bitstream (undecoded LPCM) over it's optical connection, but only for 2-channel recordings and not for any HD format, although I am still at a loss at to whether they consider 2-channel SACD DSD playback an HD audio format. Still, at this location (http://www.ps3sacd.com/faq.html#_Toc177216796) it says: Quote:Can’t I use the optical digital output? Originally, you could for games, CDs, DVDs and even BDs but you couldn’t for SA-CDs. The optical connection, also known as Tos-link, is a so-called SPDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface). It can carry stereo PCM or compressed multichannel audio like Dolby Digital and DTS, but not lossless discrete multichannel audio like DSD, multichannel PCM, Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio.
With system software v 2.00, if you’ve got an AV Receiver without HDMI PS3 can convert multichannel SA-CD to multichannel DTS for you and feed it to the optical digital output. If you disable DTS out it will output PCM stereo, also during multichannel SA-CD playback. The output frequency is 48kHz.
In version 2.01 however, DSD-to-DTS transcoding is disabled again. Optical output from SA-CD remains supported but in 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo PCM only. Hmmm... seems that with system software revisions there is no clear way to see what it will/won't do anymore.
