I am very pleased with Buffalo II - is fantastic! But I have a problem  You connect the CD player Shigaclone Buffalo II for 10...30 minutes the sound stopped on a split second ... With another CD player (Philips 723) all goes well. Any idea to solve the problem? Thanks:):) Vitaly

Maybe variations in the clock of the shigaclone. The Buffalo looses synch

Yep definitely sounds like the source SPDIF may cut out after a while or have a significant disruption.

I just built a Buffalo II during last weekend. It sounds so good, and I like it. My setup is Dell laptop + Vista + iTune + Airport Express + Monster Optic cable + Pear Toslink + Bufallo II, IVY III and Placid set + Silver Dragon cables + Headroom BUDA Amp + HD800. The Lock LED on Buffalo keeps turning off, and every time it turns off (flashes), the music is cut off and comes back, which is so annoying and terrible. I went to Apple store, and they changed one Airport Express for me, but it still happens. I don't know if anybody here has the same issue and what the solution? It'll be very appreciated. Also I think it might be better to use a USB cable. And it means to find a USB receiver. So Russ, will you have a new USB receiver soon, or can you recommend one from other resources for me? Or drop any advice. Thanks in advance. Thomas

Try a different source if you can. There are known issues with the airport express toslink.
Make sure if you use the TORX module that you go direct to D1 with the SPDIF switch off.

I move the wire from SPDIF port to D1, and turn the SPDIF switch off, but it still sounds same, glitching and glitching. I have to try the USB receiver. Can you estimate when you'll have the new USB receiver? Thanks in advance, Thomas

P.S.
I replace the optical cable with phone head to RCA cable as direct input to BUDA Amp, and it works fine, no cut-off.
I sounds like Bafullo II does not buffer data long enough to avoid data transfer delay. I don't mind if it delays 3-5 seconds or 10 seconds at beginning in order to get a smooth music play.
Not sure if it's feasible.

Another info. might be helpful:
I feel Bafullo sounds better than Bafullo II regarding sound cut-off.
I really want to try a USB receiver, and I am trying to google one.

Hi Russ,
Can you modify the code on the on-board firmware controller to get rid of the sound cut-off issue?
I don't mind it starts music even 15 seconds later as I usually click a play button on itune and then go to another room to listen to music.

Hi Thomas, This does not have anything to do with the firmware. There is no buffer. The TOSLINK output from the Airport express can be extremely bad quality. Some DACs simply pass this along as extreme jitter. The DPLL of the ESS DAC does not tolerate such extreme jitter. When it encounters extreme errors it resets. I cannot change that behavior. There is not really anything I can change. I would suggest either using another SPDIF receiver and then input I2S to the Buffalo. Or choose a better source. Cheers! You also might test regular wire (twisted) between the Toslink module and the Buffalo, rather then the shielded wire. I have seen instances of improper impedance wire causing issues.

I tried a regular wire (twisted) between the Toslink module and the Buffalo II on SPDIF and D1 ports, and it did same as the shielded wire.

I tried your solution, and it sounds as same as the wifi connection, but I like the hardwired way as it can allow me to continue surfing internet.
So it's most likely Airport Express does not have any problem.
It's most likely caused by my poor music files, even though they are bought new and converted to Apple Lossless format, or, maybe, by my Dell laptop (Inspiron 1525 Intel Duo CPU T5800@2GHz 4.0GB RAM, Vista Business, SP2).
And also Toslink module does not have a good capacity to dejitter (right word here?) poor audio data.
I'm not willing to add another S/PDIF Transceiver on the system, which make the system too complicated.
Hopefully Pear will consider dejittering on the new USB receiver with a bigger data buffer. Now the RAM is very cheap vs. 100MB.
I look forward to the new USB receiver.

I find a DVD player.
Would you mind telling how to feed DVD Digital PCM audio output signal into Bafullo DAC II? Consumer or TTL SPDIF, I2S, or DSD?

I tried both consumer and TTL SPDIF. It seemed that it didn't work.
I don't know it is the correct way to conncet the wires.
