Hi there,
This needs a bit of an introduction. You see, I am going to build a new enclosure for my lovely DAC and was thinking of adding some XLR connectors for balanced drive in the future.
Now, because most of my listening is done through my Squeezebox I always have a volume control that - to my ears - don't sacrifice audio quality. (FWIW I also have a Volumite but rather not use it). Therefore I was thinking why not hook up some balanced headphones to the back of the Buffalo DAC via the XLR outputs?
I am pretty much a noob with electronics, but I know basics and I couldn't think of one reason why this can't be done. I think without a proper amp it won't sound very good, but I am intrigued to try it anyway. That's why I am turning to you guys. What do I need to know for this?
Also, on a side note, I have another small question. For the new enclosure I am adding an extra RCA output and an extra XLR output (so total would be 2x rca output and 1x xlr output). Will I sacrifice sound quality by adding more outputs?

All of this would be fine, and you would not need a separate amp for the balanced outputs. The OPA1632 chips can deliver up to 150mA per channel, which is enough to drive any headphone load you might use.
Powering RCA and XLR at the same time (even two sets) is not going to be a problem.

Thought I should give an update here. I have been using a pair of DT880s straight from the Buffalo's balanced outputs and they sound wonderful!

so, can the Buffalo II with IVY III without replacing R25-30 with jumpers drive a 40ohm headphone? I am in the process of planning my Buffalo II build, and I just read from the manual that the single ended output might not have enough power and I might need to jump R25/26 to drive a headphone? because currently, I am planning to use the SE output to connect to both of my headphone and sound system, and really wonder can Buffalo II output to both the system and heapdhone at the same time thank you Edited by user Friday, July 9, 2010 6:57:01 PM(UTC)

Balanced it would easily drive 40 ohm load. Give it a shot, if you need to you can easily add a headphone amp later.
