Here are some snaps of my Denon DVD-1920 mod: Backpanel of the player with the cat cable connected to the Buffalo32: Closeup of the connector and mounting plate. Did a mistake and put it too high so the lid wont close, doh. Have to move it: The wires going to the various tap points for DSD, PCM and ground: They all go to a small relay switch I made: Which is attached to a Neutrik RJ45 connector: Power to the switch is taken from the 5.1 amp board. It runs to a switch which will be mounted on the side of the player and the back to the relay switch: Edited by user Tuesday, March 6, 2012 3:59:58 PM(UTC)

Cheers! Russ Thanks :) It works great and SACDs never sounded better. I had to put some feet on the player since its so light and flimsy. I also put some damping material in inside the lid to stop the metal from rattling too much.

Mr. Majestic,
Nice job - I like the looks of those 568 connectors. A couple of questions for you and/or Russ: 1) What is the total length of the wiring between the Denon board solder joints and the DAC? 2) What is your opinion of the Denon firmware - especially regarding the low frequency effects rolloff? At present, my only crossover is in my PC - it sounds great with the bass XO point at ~160. My impression is that the Denon would require that I run full range to my mids & tweeters and about 50Hz and down to the woofers. Can you confirm? Any other thoughts or suggestions regarding crossing over the DSD signal? Thanks in advance!

I want to repeat. Source GND → GND ??? Source Bit Clock → DCK ??? Source Data 1(usually left) → D1 ???? Source Data 2(usually right) → D2???? How on a photo to understand what wire??? And what name at it??? Edited by user Tuesday, May 3, 2011 3:06:06 PM(UTC)

All you have to do is look at the datasheet for the DAC chip that is on the board.

You will want the relay if you are switching between DSD(SACD) and PCM(CD/DVD).

Would like the relay!!. But how it to make???? I badly think The circuit is necessary to me! ( Or it is possible for the relay not to do???? And to CD to listen through SPDF it is parallel???? Edited by user Tuesday, May 3, 2011 3:17:44 PM(UTC)

No you definitely need the switch.
All the relay board does is route the DSD and PCM signal to the correct input on the Buffalo depending on the switch state. All of the info you will need to do that can be found in the datasheet of the BB DAC and the Manual for the Buffalo.

This is how I wired my mod. You would have to use a relay switch to do it, but at least you know which wire goes were.
DVD-1920 DSD -> Buffalo BCK (Pin 37) -> DCK DSD1 (Pin 38) -> D1 DSD2 (Pin 39) -> D2 G (Pad CS52) -> G
DVD-1920 PCM -> Buffalo PBCK (Pin 50) -> DCK PLRCK (Pin 51) -> D1 PDATA1 (Pin 46) -> D2 G (Pad CS52) -> G

If using a relay to switch between the PCM or DSD output, do only four wires need to go from the relay housed in the DVD 1920 player to the Buffalo III DAC? The relay will swtich between the following six signal wires and the common ground:
DVD-1920 DSD -> Buffalo BCK (Pin 37) -> DCK DSD1 (Pin 38) -> D1 DSD2 (Pin 39) -> D2 G (Pad CS52) -> G
DVD-1920 PCM -> Buffalo PBCK (Pin 50) -> DCK PLRCK (Pin 51) -> D1 PDATA1 (Pin 46) -> D2 G (Pad CS52) -> G
As such, if you use a three-pole relay, such that can switch from the PCM and DSD, can you just connect the three output signal wires and ground to the Buffalo III DAC?
Thanks
Kris

Nice work MrMajestic! I picked up a Denon 3910 real cheap (may need a laser). It has that Denon D Link out and was wondering if that could be used to export PCM/DSD out to the DAC? The Denon DVD 3910 has the Burr Brown PCM1796. From research that I have done, Denon went with a different design chip than the one your 1920 uses. Like PCM1782 and PCM1796 chips. They are similar in design as they have the same foot print, rectangular shape with 28 input/outputs, 14 on each side. I don't find PBCK, PLRCK or PDATA1, DSD 1, DSD2. I do have DATA, LRCK, BCK so I am not sure how to proceed with extracting PCM/DSD from it at this time. DSD1608 PCM1796 (like the 1782) Edited by user Tuesday, March 6, 2012 4:00:36 PM(UTC)

If you look in the datasheet you should find what you need:
Page 18: "Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Format Interface and Timing The PCM1796 supports the DSD format interface operation, which includes out-of-band noise filtering using an internal analog FIR filter. For DSD operation, SCK (pin 7) is redefined as BCK, DATA (pin 5) as DATAL (left channel audio data), and LRCK (pin 4) as DATAR (right channel audio data). BCK (pin 6) must be forced low in the DSD mode. The DSD format interface is activated by setting the DSD bit of control register 20. Detailed information for the DSD mode is provided in the APPLICATION FOR DSD FORMAT (DSD MODE) INTERFACE section of this data sheet (from page 41)."

Thanks very much steinholien for the help. As you can tell I am in over my head in trying to understand what I am working with. I have lots of reading to do. Or find a DVD-1920...lol. Edited by user Saturday, March 3, 2012 12:22:02 PM(UTC)
