Several low to mid range USB DACs (Like the XITEL) are aware of the volume control and mute of the PC. This is very convenient for home theaters because you want to use the PC’s volume control and mute occasionally. Other DAC kits I’ve tried don’t support this feature. They ignore the Windows volume settings in order to push the highest digital fidelity to the analog output.
Is the Opus USB volume and mute aware?

Yes. Windows mixing is available by default.
To disable windows mixing you must use ASIO driver/wrapper or something similar.

That suites me well!
Does adjusting the "Volume Control" attenuate the DAC output, or do you need to adjust the "Wave" setting? One some DACs the "Volume Control" has not effect, but the "Wave" does
Have you confirmed this under Vista? Apparently they've re-written the audio stack.

The USB DAC is treated like any other windows audio output device. The volume is adjusted in the same way.
I have tested it under vista, it works very well. No surprises.
Cheers! Russ
