I have just assembled it I get the 5.5V on the output, but the trimmer runs out of turns at about 0.247 V. Any ideas? the secondary gives me 9.8V Edited by user Saturday, April 3, 2010 6:23:38 AM(UTC)

I short circuited R6 and I managed to get the range needed to reach 350mV. yet QP1 gets substantially hotter than QN1.
In fact QN1 seems cold. Is this normal?

Yes this can be quite normal depending on what load you are driving. If you have no load than the shunt transistor is dissipating a lot of power.
