I've just built up my DAC with a Buffalo II feeding an older IVY 2.0. Unfortunately, the sound coming out is very weak (and possibly gritty). It sounds like it needs at least 4X more gain. I've tried both a TOSLINK input (pictured) and a 75 ohm input into the SPDIF/Gnd of the Buffalo II and two different digital sources, all with the same result. All the switches on the Buffalo II are untouched (i.e., ON). Power to the Buffalo II is 5.5V and to the IVY 2.0 is ±15V (triple checked). Outputs from the IVY are SE, and my pre-amp has 6X gain. Any ideas for what might be wrong? Edited by user Sunday, March 28, 2010 7:57:56 AM(UTC)

Try taking the outputs from the + and GND terminals of the balanced outputs of the IVY and see if you have the same issue (just to eliminate the Bal->SE section).

That's it, Brian! Now what? If it were a defective component or bad wiring, I wouldn't have expected both channels to be knackered.

it actually it looks to me like you installed the relay backward. The mark toward the top of the board should be toward the bottom Edited by user Sunday, March 28, 2010 10:40:03 AM(UTC)

Thanks, Russ, much appreciated! I managed to get the relay out with only 5 legs intact.... At least I can listen off half of the Balanced out while I wait for the replacement from Mouser.

No worries. Glad I spotted it. :) BTW you can still use the SE output with the relay gone, just make sure you turn off your power amp prior to the DAC, or you will get a bit of a thump. Edited by user Sunday, March 28, 2010 10:41:23 AM(UTC)

Shouldn't the Toslink input be going to the D1 connection?

Yes, and the SPDIF switch set to Off.

I'm just adding the MUX in. Should I connect its DOUT to D1 on the Buff II, or should I connect SPDIF to SPDIF?
Thanks for the help.

If you are using the MUX then I would use I2S input. :) Edited by user Sunday, March 28, 2010 7:55:40 PM(UTC)
