How it works I don't know - but what it does is to turn of the output when there is no "lock" on a signal.
I have never seen both the auto mute and lock LEDs on at the same time.

Auto mute function can be enabled by setting adequate register values.
Auto mute level, period and volume ramp down.
I guess a standard register setting of Buffalo II disables an auto mute
function based on Russ's policy.

Automute is enabled. I just don't use the zero detection because there is no need.
The automute header can be used to switch on and off output stages, that's why it is there.
Our firmware only uses automute when there is no signal locked. When there is a signal (even silence) the DACs are not muted. That is because there is no need. :) Silence is well, silent.
