Hi
Finished my b32s, very easy to assemble.
I cut the traces near the outputs.
I am using the balanced outputs into my preamp.
First time power on, no lock. aha, swiched spdif on and there is lock.
music appears, always good, but left channel is much softer then the right channel. Ajusted the balance and it does sound very good straigt out of the box.
took it on the bench again and measured the output resistance, all 22 ohms, so the traces have been cut properly!!.
Measured the outputs while powered and there is a 0,5 v dc on the left channel + to agnd and - to agnd while there is none on the right channel.
Not going to connect it again untill this is fixed.
Since i am a noob in these matteres i don't know what is going on, so a little help here would be appriciated.

John the problem is almost definitely the missing R20.

Ok so there was just 1 resistor missing, fixed it and it is playing nicely.
Thanks Russ for the help.
Can't comment to much on the sound yet, it will have break in first.

I have the same 1.1 version board. I'm connecting the I2S from Cd pro2 which worked fine with the OPUS/Metronome setup earlier. When i put in the board (It was lying unpacked for a few months now..), i get a "loud hiss" sound on one channel, and actual music is heard only in the background. One channel (left) is completely dead. I checked for R20 and it is there..? Plz help... The I2S connections are (I cannot be wrong as the Metronome/OPUS works perfectly fine in the same player) are as follows SCLK -> DCK WCLK -> D1 Data -> D2 GND -> GND Also i have removed the markings at the output, as i'm connecting the DAC to a pre. Can you try using S/PDIF out from the CD-Pro2 directly to the B32 to see if that works?

Cd-Pro2 => Metronome => B32 works fine Both Channel works fine. But i'm curious, as to why the vanilla I2S from CD Pro is not working....  Edited by user Thursday, March 18, 2010 2:25:18 AM(UTC)

Ah, I thought you were going through the Metronome to the Buffalo before. The problem is that the CDPro2 outputs 48fs, and most modern DACs (WM874x, ES90xx, PCM179x, etc) require at least 64fs PCM data.

I've been having another problem when using I2S. SPDIF works fine with no problem. When connected via I2S/MEtronome/B32S, there are "crackling" noises when music is played. I noticed that the Digital voltage into the DAC keeps fluctuating between 4.95 and 5.10 volts (LM317 set to 5.10 volts) and the voltage to Metronome drops to 7.3 from the set 7.5 volts. NOTE: The voltage fluctuates only when the CD is playing, else it is stable @ the set voltage. Scratching my head for two days now...thought it could be a simple cabling/grounding issue @ first. When the output of Metronome is set @ 48kHz, the voltate seems stable !!. When the output is set @ either 192kHz or 96kHz, the votage fluctuates ?
The "crackle" is still there...but seem to have reducted with Metronome configured @ 48kHz (Still not fully 100% sure about the "crackle" noise...which could still be a different issue)

Just a thought, are you using the volumite? When I first set up the Sabre32S I was getting static along with music. The cure was to remove IC8 when using the volumite. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ichiban. I'm not using a volumite/I2C. I'm using an external preamp (opamp). Further it is not a constant static that i get...just a mild "crackling" sound once in a while when playing music (it is however frequent enough to spoil the listening experience) I still wonder why the input voltage fluctuates with 96 or 192 kHz (I'm still not sure whether the noise and this voltage issue are same or different issues. The noise went away after cleaning up the internal wiring. Think this is because one of the wires (from transformer to LCPBS PCB) was very close or touching the chassis earth. Regarding the other issues with respect to voltage drop based on Metronome setting...was solved after i used an isolation transformer for power. Think it was being caused by some other device running @ home ....and yes the sound...its divine  Edited by user Friday, March 26, 2010 5:28:58 AM(UTC)
