Hi Russ and Brian,
I know that you must be very busy and I don't want to disturb and delay your work so I will make my question as short and concise as possible:

Q: Can the the dual-mono BII with IVY-III "combo" be assembled as a BII/IVYIII/BII stack with board-to-board connectors only and no wires?

Thanks,
Nic

For dual-mono, you need to use two IVY-IIIs, so you would just have two stacks next to each other.

So I guess that means that the two outputs of each IVY-III will tied on the XLR
I will then have to "tweak" my order in some way. Please let me know how.

Here is a diagram...

It does make it look a lot more complicated than it really is. You use the SE outputs as the balanced outputs. If you need SE outputs, you would have to add a separate Ballsie.

Thanks,
If I understand correctly the dual-mono configuration requires the Ballsie circuits on the IVY-III's.
Is this the only way, or the best way, of connecting it up?
It just seems counterintuitive that balanced to SE conversion is needed with balanced output.....
Is the (possible) benefit of the dual-mono vs. stereo configuration not partially degraded by these additional components in the signal path?
Anyway, it will certainly be easy to A/B compare the two configurations by swapping µC on the volumite and changing output.
Will be fun!

Hi Nic, there is a very real benefit. What happens is that the Bal/SE stages are really now just halves of a differential signal. You still get all that normal benefits that each fully symmetrical half would normally have. :)

The key here is the fact that the I/V stages combine to increase the dynamic range.

Also the outputs load the two halves of the DAC with the same signal, but in exactly the opposite phase. This further increases dynamic range and increases channel separation.

So while, yes, its a lot of parts in there, it does indeed make things better. :)

Cheers!
Russ

Hello Brian,

I downloaded your schematic of the Mono BII and IVY-III.
posted on this thread.
After reviewing it, I have a few questions :

1) I noticed that one of the DACs is
missing DVCC input. Is this a misprint?

2) The top and bottom pairs of BII and IVY-III are
wired exactly the same. It looks like
both balanced outputs are set for the right channel.
Am I reading this correctly?

3) Can you identify which BII DAC is set for
mono-left and mono-right?

I know how busy you are
thanks for your time,

1- DVCC powers Volumite, so getting power from one BuffII is sufficient
2- In Mono, one of the channels is in antiphase. The balanced outputs are taken from both the single ended outputs (is all done in s/w in the volumite)
3- I think it will be set by software in Volumite depending on the I2C address of the BuffII board

You don't need the Volumite to achieve dual-mono. The on-board firmware also has mono and channel setting switched as well. With the Volumite, you select which channel a board reproduces by using the Address jumper on the B-II (jumper or no-jumper). This gives each of the boards a different I2C address so they can be controlled independently.

The diagram Brian posted above is not correct in regard to the output sections. Please refer to this diagram instead:
