Hello I bought a Buffalo DAC (first model + IVY + USB) in january 2008, it was working well then when I mounted it in my DIY preamp. While working on a relay input selecter and having issues with it, the Buffalo stayed months in a drawer, and yesterday I remounted it in my completed preamp. And no sound comes out from the DAC. I checked the two power supplies, everything seems ok : -15V/+15V on LCBPS and +6V/+6.6V on LCDPS. The Buffalo is in SPDIF mode (SPDIF switch ON, DIP switch all on central position except 1 on +) I checked the wiring : LCBPS -/G/+ to IVY -/G/+ LCDPS G/+6V to G/VD and G/+6.6V to G/VA USB receiver D0/GND connected to SPDIF/G on Buffalo Buffalo outputs Left +/G/- and Right +/G/- connected to IVY inputs IN2 +/G/- and IN1 +/G/- IVY balanced outputs +/G/- directly connected to the inputs of my balanced preamp (after I tried to connect the IVY outputs to my relays selecter). All are OK. With my laptop connected to USB, I have sound coming out from the analog output from the USB receiver, but nothing elsewhere. Does the Buffalo lock (LED)? If so, you can disconnect the IVY and check for signal directly at the Buffalo outputs.

High Brian Thanks for your fast answer. I don't have any led on my Buffalo, but I see on the board LOCK and AUTOMUTE near what looks like two led outlines labeled D1 and D2. You can use any low-output led. Blue LEDs are usually too bright. There were two green LEDs included with the original Buffalo kit for this.

Well it seems leds were missing with the kit I received, but that's not important.
I just checked with a led : LOCK doesn't light up and AUTOMUTE does.

If you are not getting the lock led on, them I'd check that the board is receiving a digital signal. Use a scope to see that there's a signal on the spdif connector. With no signal I believe you should see a steady clock. With music laying it should look like a bunch of random width square waves.

Fresh news !
In my drawer, I also have the toslink receiver, in case I could need such input, and I just remembered that Apple laptops nowadays have a combined headphone jack output with optical digital output, and I have a toslink/jack optical cable from an old MD player. So I took my girlfriend's recent MacBook which has this optical output (my old Powerbook doesn't).
I disconnected the USB board and replaced it with the toslink board, plugged the MacBook, selected optical digital output on it, and guess what : the Buffalo lock led is on, and the sound comes out from my skeakers !
Now I need to find why the USB receiver is playing music on its analog output and is not locking to the DAC.
Any suggestion to check ?

Do you have the SPDIF/I2S jumper in place on the USB module (set for SPDIF)?

Hi I'm back.
I just tried the USB + Buffalo in i2s mode :
USB's jumper on i2s position
Buffalo's SPDIF switch on 1 (not ON)
Buffalo's DIP switch 1 on -, others in open (I also tried + and -, no difference)
wires :
USB BCK to Buffalo DCK
USB LRCK to Buffalo D1
USB D0 to Buffalo D2
USB G to Buffalo G
USB D0 to USB D1 in order to test USB's analog output with a headphone.
(I saw the wiring in [/url=http://www.twistedpearaudio.com/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=882]that other discussion[/url])
Buffalo's leds : automute is off, lock is on
But no sound comes from Buffalo's output or USB's analog output !?!
What could I check ?

It sounds like you might have a dead USB module... Is it working on its own?

Hello Russ As I wrote in my first post, I get sound from the analog output of the USB module in SPDIF mode. I don't have any sound in i2s mode when D0 and D1 are connected together. And the module is seen by any of my computers as USB audio DAC. I'm planning to order a MUX module, if there's no alternative, I'll order a new USB module too. :-( Thanks Edited by user Monday, February 22, 2010 12:21:38 AM(UTC)

Hello
I received the new USB receiver and the MUX, I mounted them, all configured in SPDIF, and everything is working now, so it was the USB receiver that was dead.
About the MUX, I left all switches open and it's working, but I don't know if a different configuration would be more optimal ?
I need to check my other digital inputs (toslink and RCA).
