I think I have hit most of what people want in the new design.

I stuck with stereo/mono for now (as that is by far the most popular and highest fidelity application), but I am still very much intending to do an 8 channel version at some point.

We are making the Buffalo II module more affordable than Buf32S so doing multi channel with two or three boards is more cost effective with better fidelity in the end.

Cheers!

Great to hear that, and yes, I also will use it stereo only. However, I forgot to mention an overall problem which I see in the DAC market (and since you offer an USB module, the same stands for the module you offer): All USB solutions seem to be based around USB 1.1. Which means, that 16/48 is the highest these can transmit. However, FLACs recorded in 24/96 or 24/192 can not be transmitted by these without prior downsampling. So, an USB solution 2.0, that does 24/192 would be great.

And a multi-channel seems a good idea too, though, I am fine with stereo.

Perhaps VIA's new chip might come in handy for that.

We are already in the queue for a datasheet, but fromt he rather vague description, I suspect there may be some licensing issues around exposing unprotected hidef audio. We shall see.

We are also looking at a few other options, but there are several other items we need to get going on before hi-res usb happens.

FWIW, it isn't the USB interface data rate that is the problem. USB 1.1 is capable of 12 megabits per second, and 24/192 stereo music is only 9.216 megabits per second.

That is such insane overkill for what is needed as well. A cheap 24/192 PCM270* equivalent, and an audio stack/driver that supports it...... it really shouldn't be as hard as it is :(

I find the Musiland devices with minor mods very good performers

Good call.
The 24/192 USB crowd is well covered by the M2Tech and Musiland offerings at the moment.

This design from Xmos is supposed to work well with the Buffalo. Windows drivers are only available in beta after signing a NDA though (at the moment anyway).

One should not forget, that most, if not all people here, want the Sabre for its fantastic sound quality. If they'd want another DAC chip, they'd go somewhere else ;-)

Nobody is talking about switching DAC chips. :)

The XMOS chip will be used for USB interface.
