hello have looked at the photo of your new buffalo pcb and the small pcb in the center on top of main dac pcb between mono IVYII boards is really interesting! after zooming and rotating it looks as if it´s got 2 Digital in and the 2 LEDs at each end indicates that it might be a sort of switching/control device? maybe for autodetecting between dsd and pcm? or what kind of secret device might it be? just very curious best Leif Norway

It looks to me like there is only one power input to the DAC board. Thus I suspect the new PCB is a way of deriving Va or some other voltage reference.

do you not only need VD to the main Dac pcb and one VA to each mono IVY II ? best Leif

christensenleif@msn.com wrote:do you not only need VD to the main Dac pcb and one VA to each mono IVY II ? best Leif I believe that the DAC chip itself needs analogue voltage, or at least a voltage reference. If you look at the first Buffalo (DAC board only, no onboard IVY), you had both Vd and Va supplied by separate power terminals. For Buffalo32S, I would guess that Va for the DAC was taken from the positive rail of the analogue supplies; the positive rail's current draw is stated as 25mA higher than the negative rail. For Buffalo II, I can't see where Va is coming from. There doesn't seem to be any analogue voltage input, or supply from the IVY II. So this new PCB is an obvious contender. sounds sensible...I remember wondering about the difference in current draw on the + and - side anyway...in a few days we´ll know for sure best Leif

It gotta be a psu for Va. Russ mentioned something about new small supply coming up together with the Buffalo II. I just hope it won't get fried sitting there right over the Sabre chip. Nic

Hi Guys :) As some of you have surmised, the little mystery PCB is indeed a little dual shunt regulated AVCC power supply. It supplies the left and right AVCC supply pins of the DAC. It is a optimized version of the placid circuit especially tweaked for this application. The Buffalo II board is very different from the original Buffalo. This will be very obvious when you get a good look at it. I am extremely pleased with it so far. The DAC only requires one external voltage supply (though its is possible to use more, but not worth it IMO). Here is why. Local regulation and good layout and isolation. :) Plain and simple, all you will need is a single placid (or similar good PS) for VD. Of course the IVY does require a bipolar supply as expected. You can use one or two Placid BP for that task. Cheers! Russ Edited by user Tuesday, January 5, 2010 9:09:21 PM(UTC)

Nice! May I kindly ask for the dimensions of the new Buffalo and IVY boards? I would like to play a bit with space considerations in my current enclosure and be ready when this marvel comes out! Edited by user Wednesday, January 6, 2010 4:54:53 AM(UTC)

Quoting Brian from the homepage: Quote:"The new version ("Buffalo II") is the same size as the original Buffalo (2" x 3.3"), and the same size as our other digital modules, which allows for easy stacking."
