Buff 24 with IVY and vol.

Sometimes it sounds like there's a frog in the system. Think (how else to describe a sound that sounds like a frog).

Serious, it does. The system plays but when there's a transient in the music, it gets modulated with "the frog".

A powercycle cures the problem. I'm using 3 trannies. 2 pcs. 5VA 2*12v (each 12v parallel) for LCDPS and 1 * 5VA 2*15v for the LCBPS. The system is not starving for power, the trannies runs cold. It's obviously something related to the start up sequence. When it has been powercycled, it can run ok for days.

My other system (Buff 24 with IVY and vol.) is playing ok.

The 230v mains supply and the red SATA cable used for the vol. are NOT close together.

Anyone ???

Get out of here. Kermit was more onto the beat. This sound is more laidback. More in sync with the music.

Forget it, will just open a zoo.

LOL.

(the problem persists).

Problem solved.

Some idiot had placed a couple of caps inside my amp, bypassing the inputs to ground. Hmmm...

The IVY was oscillating like ....

(I know the idiot Whistle Brick wall )

Well, I was to quick on the trigger. It's NOT solved.

I'll try to describe the problem as modulated distortion following the bassline of the music. My previous attempt to describe the sound og the problem ended - lets say, rather way out.

It's periodic, and always coming within 1-2 minutes after "cold start". When power cycled the problem disappears and stays away.

My guess is that it correlated to the startup sequence.

The funny thing is, that my other Buf24, ver. 1.1 has newer had the problem.

My question, Russ, is there any difference in the firmware from the 1.1 (labeled 1.0.3) and the firmware in version 1.2 (not labeled). My next move is to swap the PIC's.

D Silenced

No need to swap the PIC's then. I'll try without the vol. then.

After that, adding 10cm of wire between the PSU's and the BUF/IVY. That's the only difference between my two implementations.

I think I found the cause of the problem. My Squeezebox3' SPDIF is drifting ( Think ) upon startup, causing the PLL to be upset. That's the only logical explanation I can come up with.

If I start the Squeezebox first and let it rest for a little white and then starts the Buf - it's plays perfectly. I'll try with another source tomorrow just to be sure.

Anyone - what's happening with my SB3 SPDIF ??

Sorry for having picked on the Buf. I guess it has been 100% OK all the time. Well, it could be a premature conclusion, but it has behaved 2 out of 2 times now.

Did you recently upgrade to the new release of SqueezeCenter and firmware? I did and my Squeezebox Boom (my kitchen radio) has been occasionally making strange squak noises, then sometimes playing with constant peak distortion. The only way to fix it is removing power completely so it reboots.

Yes and always have. Running 7.5.0.

Problem has persisted from the very beginning with this pair. And they have always been a pair. I have newer suspected the output of the SB3.

Remember, I have 2 identical systems, I have newer heard this problem on my other system. NEVER. So it's related 100% to this specific HW. The other system runs on the same SS and with same firmware.

Just to close this.

It is the SB3. Getting a swap unit next week.

If you have not heard the same sound in another Buffalo board, then you can be sure it is just this particular one, right?

I have similar experience with my Buffalo 24, which will start making clicking noise on top of the music when CD track changes. Change the PLL setting would not fix it. But the same board is working fine when used with PCM input. That is why currently my Buffalo is sitting behind a CS8412 chip.

I have to say that the DVP I am using does not generate perfect SPDIF, my older MD10 DAC can't even get a lock on. But I expect ESS chip can do better job than cs8412. Maybe something on board is wrong.

Interesting, I think.

Perhaps it is the chip itself, or the comparator ?

Anyone else ?

Increasing the DPLL bandwidth can help here, at the expense of allowing through more jitter.

I mean more than the on-board controller does. Of course the possibility of a damaged comparator or digital input is also possible.

Just as a not, I have used the demo boards for ES9018 and ES9008, and I have found that they too are not very tolerant of very poor SPDIF signals. When I want to be sure such SPDIF signals will be tolerated I use the MUX and then I2S into the Buffalo (24 or 32).

Back to square one. d'oh!

When powering up the source, letting it settle, powering up the DAC, then everything is ok.
When powering up the source, powering up the DAC then the sound sometimes get distorted.

And this is with a new SB3 as source.
