Hi,

I'm hoping you can help me. I've recently noticed that I'm getting a distortion in music, which accompanies the bass line. It is a crackling with bass guitar parts a 'fizzing' on drums. The weird part is that mids and treble seem unaffected. If I play the same cd via the cd players internal DAC, it sounds fine, with no distortion.

Set-up as follows:

VA: 15V30VA traffo supplying a homebrew lm317/lm337 reg. Have also used Paul Hynes Z1A/Z1N shunts, with the distortion remaining.
VD: 9V7VA traffo supplying a homebrew lm317 reg. Again, have also used PH regs, and also a Salas simple shunt from DIYAudio forum.

GND's are joined at the PCB (it already has the 0R links on the PCB), and also at the regs.

Output links are cut on the pcb, enabling the output resistors.

The dac is set to accept spdif input, directly via bnc connector.

The b32 feeds into a headphone amplifier.

Please let me know if you need any further info.

You have to be very careful about start up sequence for power supplies. It is possible the DAC is damaged. It is very difficult to say.

It is also possible to damage the ESS chip if you do not take proper ESD precautions.

Pictures might help us see if something is wrong for a wiring perpspective.

Traced to the spdif level out of both my PC and CD player being a bit hot ('scope probe on the way, will post the level when it arrives). Turning the spdif out of PC down has removed the crackling. The tracks that were most affected were ones that are from fairly compressed CD's.

As the mouse-over tag at XKDC says "Nothing on a project can go wrong if you wear a wrist strap!"

Big Thanks to Leo for helping me sort this out, and thanks to you guys at TP, this DAC is excellent!
