Hi,
I'm very excited to be embarking on a 32s build-out (I already have the DAC module) but I'm an EXTREME novice so I need some help to make sure I get whatever else I will need (other than the enclosure). Could someone give me a hand with a recommended parts list? What I'd like is:
(a) A full range of inputs (S/PDIF, USB and Toslink right?). (Question here - would an input selector have any impact on sound quality?) (b) Balanced and single ended outputs (c) Volume control (can I get remote controlled volume?). I would only want to have a volume control if it has NO impact on sound quality. Can anyone tell me if it would?
The idea with the above is to include whatever options I might use in time as my system evolves (would prefer to do the build-out once). Is there anything else you would suggest that I might have forgotten about? Finally, I'm going to run it off battery power - in case that makes any difference to the above.
Would appreciate any help you can give me.
Cheers Will

I would keep your build as simple as possible to begin. Then add things later.
A) you would want the MUX, TORX module, and USB module. If you use the the TORX and USB modules (In SPDIF mode) you will want to use two Rs at the output to reduce the output voltage down to consumer level 374R on output with 93R shunt to GND will work nicely. TTL outputs of the USB module and TORX module will not like the 75R input impedance of the MUX. So you need the resistors to help protect them.
B) You don't have to do anything special to support this, but if you like you can add the Ballsie Lite.
C) Volumite for volume control has for less impact then any analog solution you are likely to find and perfect channel matching.
Cheers! Russ

Will you have the right idea.
The Ballsie Lite is nearly out in the wild. :)

Sounds crazy - and probably is - but my story (knowing I'm a real novice so I know that I know almost nothing) on battery power is that I like it because: a) Living in Bermuda I expect the main-line power is highly variable and, given all I read about how much people seem to spend on power cables and conditioning, untreated power might be a negative b) given the above, if I can use battery power I can save a bundle on power conditioners and power cables and end up with as good if not better sound c) Gary Dodd has just released a battery buffer and amp that, given I have high sensitivity speakers, offer a relatively inexpensive and yet as high quality as I deserve d) I'll likely be using a Macbook as a source so, if I can get the DAC off battery power, coupled with the Dodd amp and buffer I can get an entire system "off the grid" - wouldn't that be cool? having said that - I'm all ears!! Will, I don't see any harm at all in battery power, and indeed there are likely many cases it will be better than the alternative. Its just I don't personally see it as the panacea some others seem to. Lets just say I am open but unconvinced. So for: a) Ok definitely a case where battery power may be more reliable. b) Very hard to know without more facts. But little or no risk in using batteries if your comfortable doing so, so if you are go ahead. c) I tend to defer to the knowledge of others in areas I have little experience. So for Dodd's applications I can only express respect if he has good results. d) Indeed off the grid is cool in my book. My recommendation is to do the most practical thing that gets your project off the ground. Do what you understand and you can execute with confidence. Cheers!
