I have a problem with the USB module when running on Snow Leopard OS. The audio cuts out every 30 seconds, a problem that didn't occur when running under Windows. What could I check on the Apple when troubleshooting because I don't think its the actual module that is faulty.

I had a similar problem on my old laptop. Using a different USB port solved it (in my case I switched to a PCMCIA USB card because the built-in USB ports were messed up). It could also be related to a conflict of some kind with another USB device (shot in the dark).

Some usb ports provide other services (such as keyboard, mouse) which may interrupt high rate audio streaming. On my MacBook Pro, the right USB port works best. Try other ports and avoid USB hubs.

Changing USB ports doesnt help. Tried a Beresford USB DAC and that work flawlessly. Maybe there is something I'm not seeing in the wiring.

I just realized that the USB connector might have ground connected to the chassis. Could this be a problem since the chassis is connected to AC ground?

Hmm, problem is not 100% gone. It still cuts out at random intervals for a few seconds at a time. Its not as frequent as before, but its still there. The lock LED on the DAC goes out when it happens too.

I think quite a few poeple have had problems with MacMinis, especially with Toslink. One thing you could now try since it is working, is changing USB sockets and maybe a good quality short USB cable? Good isolation from the mains seems to pay dividends for the DAC and might be worth investigating along with a solid steel case. Also maybe power the USB interface from the DAC end rather than the computer end? As for the Mac Mini, turn off any unnecessary stuff, Dashboard and any processes you don't need. I've found off turning off encypted memory can help quite a bit. If you can live without it, turn of WiFi and Bluetooth and anti-virus. My old MacMini is now running Snow Leopard with Toslink at 24/96 and now seems OK apart from the occasional stutter from the external USB drive at the start of tracks. I guess more memory / better processor could help here, but I will probably wait until I get a new machine for music... Hope this helps? Edited by user Sunday, October 18, 2009 2:07:10 AM(UTC)
