Hi
I've only just received my Buffalo 32S and am still sorting it out, but I have a question about its DSD capabilitities.
One of the players I own is a (modified) Oppo DV980H. This can output a DSD stream from SACD via its v1.2a HDMI output.
My question is- how do I connect the player and Buffalo together to transfer DSD? I had naively thought that I just had to locate the relevant wires in the HDMI cable. But, having searched in vain for clarification, I've reached the preliminary conclusion that it's more involved that that?
Can anyone help?

HDMI is encrypted to prevent people from tapping the hi-res audio. In order to decrypt it, you need to license the technology. It is designed specifically to prevent what you are trying to do. Nice huh?
Because of this, the only way to to use the DSD output is to tap it from the Oppo player before it becomes encrypted. The easiest way to do this is to locate the DSD DAC in the Oppo, and tap the signals from it's input pins.
Several people have done this successfully with Denon SACD players, and I know people were trying it with the Oppo players, but I don't remember seeing any details on an Oppo implementation.

Hi Brian Thanks, that what I feared. On the other hand- with a bit of help- I should manage what's needed! The Oppo uses the Cirrus Logic CS4361- CS4361Which pins should I tap; what sort of cable and connectors should I use; and to where should I connect them on the Buffalo? The CS4361 only processes PCM (I2S, LJ, RJ), so you will need to find where they are converting the DSD to PCM. Do you have a schematic?

Looking at this picture, it looks like the main processor outputs directly to the HDMI connector. You may not be able to tap the DSD in this player.

I see what you mean. So the main processor is itself converting DSD to PCM, to feed the DAC, and also encoding the DSD to the HDMI standard for export

I've successfully tapped into Sony SCD-XA3000ES player which utilizes BB's DSD1608 DAC. Looking at pictures of other Sony players, they probably all use Burr-Brown DACs which have DSD inputs (even the recent "hit" SCD-XA5400ES). It's true though that they're a bit expensive as a transport only for Buffalo. Therefore I'm really interested in the Oppo BDP-83, as it seems to be a definitive be-it-all player. Does anybody successfully hacked into this player? I hadn't time to open mine yet. Edit: I googled a bit and found out that the dedicated stereo analog output uses the Cirrus CS4398 and the 7.1 channel analog output uses the Cirrus CS4382A. According to datasheet both chips sport DSD inputs - yipee! It seems that a little surgery is on order ;-) Edited by user Saturday, September 12, 2009 2:58:16 AM(UTC)

Not yet. I've to finish the I2S and DSD outputs on my former player and finalize the Buffalo32s enclosure first. It's high on my list though, so hopefully I'll get to it soon.
