I finally got my Buffalo in a chassis and fired it up. All I get is white noise. Voltages all check and the computer sees the PCM2707. Any thoughts?

How are you feeding the Buffalo from your computer?

I am using Doede's USB I2S/SPDIF (w Tent clock) board in I2S mode. The computer recognises the USB DAC and all voltages check but only white noise on outputs equal in both channels. When I remove the connections to the USB board the white noise is unchanged. I had this setup working before w original Buffalo board. I did have a boo boo and had 7.5v on the 2707 for a few minutes and it is only rated for 6.5v so I may have fired it but I guess my question is should the buffalo produce white noise w no input?

No connection to the USB board does not mean no input to the Buffalo board (unless you mean you are also disconnecting the USB board from the Buffalo). Try the Buffalo without the USB board connected at all to isolate the problem (if you are not doing this already).
I would power up the USB board alone and check the voltages on the I2S lines to be sure you are not outputting rail voltages or the like which could possibly harm the Buffalo. You can also check the line outputs of the USB module to be sure it is still functional.
If everything seems to check out (and only after you are sure the outputs are safe), try supplying the Buffalo with S/PDIF to see if that works any better.

Hi Brian, indeed, I had disconnected the USB board. I checked for voltages and none are present on the I2S outs of the USB board. I get a .015v AC on the outputs of the DAC no matter what I try, connected or not connected to the USB board. I checked to see that L1 and L2 are jumped, the dips are all centred and SPDIF is off. I have not cut any traces on the board. Just trying to make sure I have the configuration correct.
Is there anything I have missed? What else can I try?

What voltages are you supplying the Buffalo with? Are you getting a lock or automute with nothing connected?

Also, was the USB module connected to the Buffalo when you had it powered with 7.5V?

I have +/- 15v and 5v as recommended. I did have the DAC and USB board connected when 7.5v was present on the 2707. However it does not seem fried. The computer recognises it with no issues. I will now disconnect them, provide 7.5v again and see what happens with the output. The 2707 is rated for 6.6v so it may have survived.
The DAC does not mute when disconnected from the USB board.

Nope, just the LEDs. They are not pre-installed to that they can be mounted remotely if desired.

OK, I mounted them up and now get a mute illumination. Lock does not illuminate even with active USB input to USB board. Can you give me a next step please?

None of the 1543 components are installed or powered. I built this board just for I2S output. Is it odd that the mute LED illuminates and the boards still issues white noise? Edited by user Thursday, August 27, 2009 10:43:54 PM(UTC)
