6 hours ago I have just powered up the latest version of the Buffalo...so I guess it still needs some time to burn in...My immediate impression: Lots of resolution and details. But as well a technical signature, sometime hard way and less warm than outher DACs. So...I know that PSUs can have a big effect and as well output stages.

If I got it right, the DAC-Chip outouts voltage and it does not make to much sense for an alternative I/V-converter, right ? So, if we get voltage, how can I bypass the opamps / the IVY and e.g. use a tube-outputstage or the DAC-Outputstage of Erno Borbely (http://www.borbelyaudio.com/pics/Web435DAC.pdf)fed directly from the DAC-chip ?

Best Regards

Frank

The Buffalo32S is designed with the output stage integrated. It is not supported to run it any other way. It is fine for you to try, but you are on your own.

Cheers!

Frank,

A guy from Poland named Lukasz worked on tube output stages for the Buffalo DAC, and includes some very detailed comments and photos. I think he was working on different versions of the Buffalo DAC which did not incorporate the I/V output stage. Regardless, you might find his comments a decent place to start:

You might wander around his site to see how he by-passes various output stages on CD players and how he approaches tube output stages for digital sources also.

Good luck and let us know about your progress.
