Buffalo32S firmware not needed and/or not working?

Having some trouble connecting a DVD player with B32S via the ASRC module I engaged a much more simple modification to the already fabulous B32S: the installation of a Volumite!
I removed the firmware chip on the B32S board and attached a Volumite with the B32S firmware. Result: full output, no attenuation by rotation of the pot !?
I tried a couple of things like reset, power on/of etc. but always with the same result: Full power and great quality music.....but no attenuation!
Funny enough I found that the B32S works quite nicely without the firmware chip on the board and without a Volumite attached.
Note: The same Volumite works quite nicely when used to control a Buffalo24 DAC board (obviously with the B24 firmware chip) so I don't think the problem is with the Volumite.
What could be wrong?

How are you powering the Volumite? Does it have it's vreg installed?

Brian, The Volumite is powered from the board, no vreg installed on Volumite, and the two units connected the same way as with the B24 (where the same Volumite is working). Thanks, Nic Edited by user Thursday, June 25, 2009 5:32:15 PM(UTC)

At this time of night, the frogs are rather loud... :)
I have to guess there is an issue with your Volumite firmware chip. I'll send a replacement out.

Wow? Frogs as an acoustic noise problem! I guess even Sabre will not have a filter for that. Fortunately.
Turn off your hi-fi (and more important the PC) and enjoy the acoustics of full resolution life.......

The BUF32S will indeed operate without the controller on board, and actually pretty well in SPDIF mode, but with PCM input the channel separation will be off because the inputs need to be rerouted to the appropriate DACs via firmware. :)

Problem solved and B32S/Volumite working perfectly. The position of the SCL and SDA pins, with respect to the VDD and G pins, are opposite on the Buffalo32S and Buffalo24 boards. I'm using a molex connector and only daylight allowed me to see this clearly. I guess this change was introduced to match the position on the Volumite when using ribbon cable for the connection.

Q: Does the signal routed through the firmware?
If PCM(I2S) data has to travel to Volumite and back to DAC, does the cable length and its quality between B32 board and Volumite matter?

Hongki MIN No, the firmware just sets registers in the DAC, which performs the routing internally.
