It all depends. The nice thing about the additional stage is it will always be centered on GND no matter if the inputs have common mode offset. The OPA1632 has a lot more current output capability than many other opamps making it a wonderful balanced headphone amp.
This arrangement also allows you to apply filtering in the second stage.
But yes, you are correct, if all you are after is a instrumentation amp you don't need the second stage. :)

Is the Mesh board single channel only? It seems I will need two to support stereo output.
Since my soldering skill is just so-so, any chance to get the boards with the SMD parts (LME49720 and OPA1632) pre-soldered?
Can you also share the board layout?

Besides the questions on the Mesh board, I am thinking about the Ballsie Lite introduced by Brian earlier in this thread.
If I want to maximize the SE output performance of the coming Buffalo32s, will I be able to gain a couple dBs of SNR by connecting the Ballsie Lite to the Buffalo32s balanced output when compared to just taking the SE output of the dac directly?

Yes, the MESH is for a single channel. I will see if I can find a pic of the board.
Yes you will get a bit better DNR with the Ballsie lite. :) Not only that but you can be sure you won't get any turn off thump because it has an output shunting relay. :)

Thanks Russ, I think Ballsie Lite is a good addition to Buffalo32s (and other low impedance balanced ouptut) as SE converter, and I think I am going to get one, just wonder if any pricing info is available. Perhaps Brian can give an estimate here. For more generic use, e.g. interfacing to high impedance output or maintaining symmetric input impedance, one will need an instrumentation stage. The original Ballsie may serve this function (with some customization flexiblity), or perhaps you may add a simple opamp for SE conversion to the Mesh board in parallel with the OPA1632, so the Mesh can output both SE and balanced as a generic single channel pre-amp/filter. Any comment on this? Cheers Nacder
