I put together my Buffalo 32s and I love the sound through spdif. But i wanted to try the output through I2S connection as well. I have Pop Pulse Spdif II USB-to-SPDIF converter which also has an I2S output.

I cut about 30cm piece of regular ethernet cable and picked the 4 wires, LRCK, BCK, GND and SDATA, using a multimeter. I used the rj-45 connector in the other end for the Spdif II. Then i connected the cut 4 wires as follows:

Code:

SPDIF II                     B32s
LRCK (green, pin2)        -> D1
BCK (white/orange, pin3)  -> DCK
GND (blue, pin4)          -> G
SDATA (white/brown, pin7) -> D2

I used the markings in the Spdif II front panel as reference for the pin outs.

And in the B32s side the Buffalo 1.0 manual. The spdif switch was turned off.

All i could get was about 1 second long distorted squeek out of Buffalo 32s and then silence. I rechecked the wirings and they were correct if the Buffalo 1.0 manual still applies.

Do you have any ideas what could be wrong?
I left the DV+ and SCLK wires totally unconnected. Is that ok?
Also, could it be a problem that Spdif only accepts 16 bit data through USB? Can B32s handle 16-bit output through I2S?
Do I need metronome or the usb receiver to get this working?
Do I need the rj-45 end of cable soldered instead?

Anyways, the spdif input seems pretty damn fine as well. Would be cool to get this running tho, assuming its better to have 5 meter USB cable than a spdif cable of same length.

What is the clock rate of the bit clock? Some I2S sources are 48fs. The ESS9018 requires 64fs.

There is no difference measured or that anyone I know can hear between the SPDIF input and I2S. The ESS9018 does not use an analog PLL which is why it works far better than most SPDIF receivers. So forget any prejudices against SPDIF on the BUF32S. They really don't apply. The ESS chip does not even use a recovered master clock such as most chips will. Its a completely different animal. It is all DPLL driven.

So even if your I2S is not the correct format, I would simply use the SPDIF. Just enjoy the music. :)

No idea if the device is 48fs or 64fs. There is no manual for it. Prolly the 1st one, unless someone has better knowledge. I'll open it up someday and see what it has eaten or buy/build something similar that works. But for now i cannot be bothered to fix something that obviously isn't broken. The wasted time is off from listening to the music.

Thanks for the assurance ;).

It should. It is essentially the same (for this application) as using our USB module.
