Hi all,

As all of my Music Listening is computer based (for the moment i'm connecting to a Belcanto DAC2 over optical sp/dif via an M-Audio Transit, player being Foobar2k), i was wondering what you would deem the best way to connect my new buffalo32 to a computer.

From my limited understanding:

- Direct connection over Sp/Dif : easy, direct connection to the chip

- AES/EBU: if I understood correctly, this would have to be routed through the MUX board, so it's an additional step before the DAC... altho it does have the balanced noise rejection in the cable... wondering if noise rejection or bypassing the MUX is the bigger advantage

- I2S: Could be done with either the slightly modded Juli@ soundcard, or a small board computers. Then again, i remember reading that there shouldn't be any difference as to how the Sabre32 handles Sp/dif compared to I2S, making this effort useless. Another additional problem would be longer I2S runs, and getting voltage right?

- Wordclock link: Wouldn't be useful, as the buffalo ignores incoming wordclock? What about synching a soundcard like a Lynx to the clock of DAC board instead?

I'm still very new to DIY, so please correct any errors or misconceptions i make in my limited assumptions above :)

What would be your preferable way to hook up the Buffalo to a computer?

Thanks,
Christian

From my limited knowledge of the chip and what I have read SPDIF is the best method for sound quality versus simplicity. I am using the USB daughter card which works very well. I have used the USB direct into the Buf32 and through the Mux, I can not tell any difference of adding the mux in there. I like the added convenience of extra inputs as the DAC acts as a digital preamp of sorts. Hope this helps!

You could always get a Mac with optical out use the Toslink converter, bit perfect output out of iTunes, don't know about Foobar presume it does - thats what I'm using and it's superb..

sorry for responding so late, was on leave:

@naa3e5: thanks, nice to hear of your experiences. as i am a total beginner, i think i'll start with SP/Dif coax directly from computer to the dac, not using the MUX for now. i might later, when i want to meddle with AES/EBU perhaps then :)

@Murray: that actually ressembles my actual setup a lot : i'm using an M-Audio Transit with ASIO output (which foobar provides, thus definately bit-perfect output) which performs USB to optical output which then feeds Toslink material to the DAC. This time i wanted to bypass the optical coupling stage though, one less conversion to go through :)

That's why i even that of going for I2S... but as the DAC manages SP/Dif natively, that might as well be a moot point.
