I'm using transformer coupling and a voltage divider to to connect the AES output of my Network Steamer to the SPDIF input of my new Buffalo IIISE DAC. It's working fine, but I'd like to experiment with a few different transformers to see if the sound improves even more.
Presently, I'm getting about 0.55 Vpp at the SPDIF input. How much range do I have to play with? Is there an optimum level? The online information is a bit vague - "Consumer level or CMOS".

The IEC standard calls for a maximum peak voltage of 0.6V p-p. I think what you have is fine.

Thanks for that. Can the spdif input tolerate a higher signal for my next effort? Somewhere in Russ' github info it says "CMOS level".

There is a TTL variant of S/PDIF that is 0-5V TTL signal rather than the 0.5Vp-p standard consumer-level signal. It is not just the consumer signal increased to a 5V swing. This is actually what the SPDIF input on the Buffalo does, convert from consumer-level to TTL.

The Buffalo can utilize an external TTL S/PDIF input by connecting direct to D1.
