After posting there I got no answer. Where to find this firmware branch.

I would like to connect 1x I2S an 2x spdif to the Buf9038pro without using Otto board. If I understood it right a spare GPIO pin could be configured to be used as second spdif input. How would I need to change spdif sources in this case?

I talked about doing this using my Arduino library for the Buffalo DAC if you're up for a bit of coding. Its relatively straightforward to do

The Arduino gives you lots of options for switching between inputs - from a simple/rotary switch to IR remote or even WiFi
