I have a couple of questions concerning the Buffalo IIISE Upgrade to Pro and possibly replacing the Ivy with the Mercury.
In 2015 I purchased and assembled the following and it all works well:
Buffalo-IIISE 2-Channel DAC Module (Assembled and Tested) Trident Regulator Set (Assembled and Tested) IVY-III Kit One Placid HD BP Kit Combo Placid HD 2.1 Power Supply Kit (2.5-inch heatsinks) Required 15V and 9V transformers
To this assembly I connected a DIYINHK Isolated XMOS DSD DXD 384kHz USB to I2S/DSD PCB with ultralow noise regulator
I also connected the volume control.
I only use USB input and I input 44kHz signal relying on the 9018 to upsample the signal. I left all of the dip switches on the Buffalo DAC at default settings.
I almost never use a preamp and connect the output of the IVY directly to the amp. Some of the amps have volume controls and some don't.
I do not have the knowledge to connect or program a controller for the chip.
Do you recommend the 28 or 38? I was unable to find the difference in output.
I understand I need to replace the 1.2v Trident with the newer 1.3v model.
Is the Mercury required or recommended?
Is the Centaur required or recommended?
Is it likely that the DIYINHK XMOS converter will work or do you suggest a replacement. Is it likely a new XMOS driver would be required? I am not pinching pennies but I like to spend wisely.
Thank you for your help.

Quote:Do you recommend the 28 or 38? I was unable to find the difference in output. The 9028 has the same output current as your current (no pun intended) DAC. If you want to keep your IVY, I would stick with the 9028. Quote:Is the Mercury required or recommended? Recommended (not required). The Mercury is a better output stage, and if you go with the higher-output 9038, upgrading would be a good idea. (See above) Quote:Is the Centaur required or recommended? Recommended (not required). For the 9028, you will be fine with the Placid HD. If you go for the 9038, since you are not using higher bandwidth audio, you will also likely be fine with what you have Quote:Is it likely that the DIYINHK XMOS converter will work or do you suggest a replacement. Is it likely a new XMOS driver would be required? I am not pinching pennies but I like to spend wisely. If it is working with your current setup, it should work fine with the newer DACs as well.

Thank you Brian! What is the difference in output between the 9028-Ivy, 9028-Mercury, and the 9038-Mercury? I tried driving headphones directly from my Buffalo and although it was pretty good it was not as good as either of my headphone amps. Is it likely that output directly from the Mercury would be a signficant improvement for driving headphones directly? Edited by user Friday, March 8, 2019 2:46:01 PM(UTC)
