I am using as well the BIII with Broskie's Unbalancer at the moment...two BIII in dual mono with an input resistor of 20 Ohm as passive I/V. Sounds absolutely great.
When reading the 9038 can do four times the current, I really love it: This would mean I could take only one DAC-Board instead of two and still have double the current, which means I can lower the I/V-resistor to 10 ohms, which I guess should be low enough to have the DAC running in current mode, right ?Or even more brutal: I/V-resistor of 5 ohms and TWO 9038 in Dual mono...

The biii-unbalancer combo did outperform any DAC I have build and these were many.... I am using the BIII in dual mono, so I have 32mA ...doing the I/V with 20ohm input resistor gives me 640mVpk into the 12BH7 I am using as Input tube currently with about a gain of 20 gives an output of 12Vpk...my tube amp needs a bit more of drive (2 stage design, one 6n6p driving directly the El34 in pp/Ul). Yours may be more sensitive and you could even go lower on the i/v resistor. I did not try the 12ax7 as input tube or the 6n2p yet...the second is to be rumored to be extremely nice. But if they deliver a gain of 100 instead the 20 of the 12Bh7, you could build a tube-Based Outputstage with passive i/v as low as 2 ohm with the new 9038 or 1 ohm in dual Mono....I guess this will be low enough to make the DAC work in current output mode... Oppo finally released their 9038pro based Sonica DAC for pre-order so the availability of the final chips must be getting closer?
Russ/Brian, any updates on that new I/V stage?

Is the new Buffalo going to have the input headers directly matching the output headers of Cronus (like Buffalo III did)? If so, will Cronus fit on top of the new Buffalo or below it (with the output stage attached to the Buffalo as intended)? I would like to play with my Cronus and some other boards in a "not-used-as-intended" configuration before the new Buffalo is released, but I don't want to attach headers on the wrong side of Cronus so that it interferes with the output stage... ES9038 absolutely needs a special output stage - it's output current and current consumption is huge - it needs very special care to be sure. This is because the analog output is directly referenced to the AVCC input - there is no PSRR. So with the huge currents involved you need very special care indeed.

When will the Buffalo IV with ES9038 be available ?
Will it possible to use ES9038 with voltage out ? Will it reduce the SnN ration like the ES9018 ?

Just a suggestion. I hope the new Buffalo(s) will have the input headers directly matching the output headers of Cronus (like Buffalo III did).
If not, please consider offering a simple adapter board, so the DAC(s) can be stacked with Cronus.

Has or will there be consideration of multichannel use with this new chip, particularly in terms of supporting boards such as an 8 channel IV? To support those with digital xover or for home cinema use?
