Can I use a digital potmeter for the volume control of the Buffalo IIISE without negative effects?

Define digital potentiometer.

I you mean the onboard stock volume control circuit you can use an external controlled analog potentiometer (motorized potentiometer). How you control this potentiometer has no effect on the sound quality.

The DAC has to be able to sense resistance.


Or you could walk the path where you control the DAC including the volume via an external u-processor, like the Arduino. But that's a different approach. More about that is found right here https://hifiduino.wordpress.com/code/

On board stock volume control was meant.

The broadly used definition of a digipot can be found on http://en.m.wikipedia.or...i/Digital_potentiometer.
I plan to use one of the resistor ladder type.
I do not want to use an analog motorized pot. Neither do I want to integrate an external u-processor like the Arduino, in my project. The control of the pot is not the focus of my question, but the reaction (negative effects?) of the Twisted Pear board on the use of a digipot.

I've never tried, but as long as it can handle 3.3VDC throughput, it should be fine.
