Question Buffalo III Dual Mono, Single Placid, Channels Reversed

About two weeks ago, I converted my Buffalo III Dual Mono, Dual Placid into a Dual Mono, Single Placid. I was looking to: 1) make the build simpler, 2) with less heat and, 3) to free up some chassis real estate.

The transition went smoothly and the result is that I accomplished the three objectives above and got SQ that is indistinguishable from the Dual Placid set-up; however, I have created a new problem: The Placid channels, R + L, both balanced and single-ended are now reversed. This was verified by using a Stereophile CD 1, which has channel identification tracks.

I changed only the wiring as necessary following Leon's Integration Guide, version 2.1.3. All of the input wiring remained unchanged, and the problem occurs no matter which input is used - USB, XLR, or coaxial.

The output wiring was moved from the two Placids to the correct R + L output header on the single Placid.

I've read and re-read Leon's guide, checked this forum, and the Diyaudio Forum for an answer, but haven't found anything helpful.

There is, of course, a quick (and possibly dirty) fix: Simply reverse the output leads from the Placids to the output jacks, but this would ignore what appears to be an underlying problem.

I will be very grateful for your help.

Wherever I use the term "Placid" in the above post, I meant to use "Legato." Sorry for the mix up.

You could also change the channel assignment DIP switches.

I've looked over both the Buffalo III board and the Integrstion Guide. I didn't see anything specific for channel assignmet. Would you please elaborate? Thanks!

That's because this is a BIII, not a BII. There is no DIP switch for the channel assignment on a BIII. Please follow the procedure on page 21: change the ADDR jumper.

Leon, thanks for your very quick reply.

I have checked, checked again, and rechecked the set-up of the Buffalo III boards following the instructions on p. 21 of your Integration Guide. Although I may have made a mistake three years ago when I first built my DAC, I don't think the problem is there because I had a Dual Mono Dual Placid DAC with correct channel orientation for the past three years prior to recently converting it to a Dual Mono Single Placid, which is when the channel reversal problem occurred.

I recently discovered that the channel reversal problem is further complicated by the fact that on single-ended output the channels are oriented correctly. It is only on balanced output that the channels are reversed. This has been confirmed several times in the past two weeks with a CD that has channel orientation tracks

Still scratching my head!

That's not really possible, since the output stage feeds both channels from the same source.

Do you have the channels connected to the output stage correctly?
