I've looked through a bunch of posts but can't really find anything about my problem. I have the DAC hooked up to a juli@ soundcard via spdif and I get a constant lock but the sound is very scratchy, almost as if its distorted. If anyone has any recommendations that'd be great. Thanks.

I haven't tried with another one yet. I'll put the Toslink module together to test it with something else.

I just grabbed a cd player and used SPDIF out from that and it does the same thing. Also to clarify how exactly it sounds, voices and guitars come out clearly but once drums or anything louder kicks in the sound becomes distorted. Edited by user Monday, February 23, 2009 1:29:36 AM(UTC)

sounds like you use single ended but the wrong connections. only use + and ground of each channel

I have them plugged into the G and SE slots which I'm pretty sure are the correct ones for SE output.

I assume it is the same on both channels (?). Try switching to the + and GND terminals of the balanced outputs to see if that sounds any better. If so, it is the LME49720 opamp.
What rail voltage are you running the IVY at?

I seem to be having a similar problem with a Buffalo that I built that is currently out on loan to a friend. He says that every time he does the following:
* Switch Tracks
* Stop and Re-play a track.
* Change sampling rate being sent to the Buffalo
he has tried it with multiple sources and the problem persists. He also said that when it happens sometimes it helps to shut the DAC off for 10 seconds or so. He also said that changing digital cables seemed to help but did not fix the problem, I'm thinking that the cable has nothing to do with it.
The set up is the Buffalo/LCDPS/LCBPS/Ivy and setup to output single ended. I'm guessing I should see if I can get my friend to swap the outputs to come directly off the balanced outputs instead of the SE outputs to see if that is the problem area? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I used the DAC in my setup for over a month fed by both a CD transport and SB3 without issue.

An update to my previous post, my friend continued to try some tests and hooked up the DAC to a standard CD player and the DAC works fine with that. So we seemed to have narrowed the problem down to when he tries to send it something other than a 16/48 digital signal. I was under the impression that the DAC could accept a wide range of inputs? Do I have one of the dip switches set wrong possibly? I set it up according to the manual for using with straight SPDIF input. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which comparator is on the board? What is the marking on top of the comparator?
If it has the older comparator it will not lock correctly onto > 48khz.

Russ, This is as good a picture as I have and I'm not sure you can see what you need to see. It probably has the old comparator, hence the problem. I'll try contacting Brian to see if he's still offering to upgrade them for folks (since the DAC is no longer in my possession) but my emails to him recently are getting bounced.

Since its a 1.1 board, my guess is it is the comparator issue. I will get with Brian about it.
One thing I would suggest, is simply adding 4.7nf-10nf caps at C13-C16 and the IVY. :)
