Brian/Russ,
I was wondering why you have chosen Panasonic FC caps for the Placid HD 2.1, while the previous versions all had FM caps which have lower ESR.
Do FC caps have characteristics that make them better suited for the 2.1?

I supply both FM and FC in this position, depending on availability. There is no difference in circuit performance between them, in this case.

Just wanted to ask without creating a separate topic - can i use larger Panasonic FR 180uF 50Vin place of small electrolytes in Placid BP (47uF)? Or simply any other electrolytes that fit physically? Also, can i use 35V caps as well, any reason to go for such a high voltage? Just wanted to assemble another Placid (PCB only) soon and hoped to use parts i have at hand.. So i made sockets of sorts and tried what caps i had at hand. All worked, but surprisingly i could hear some difference. I tried Panasonic FR 180uF 50V and even 330uF 25V, as well asnichicon KZ 47uF 50V. 180 and 330 are very alike, but i feel 330uF/25V sound maybe a tiny bit better? Although i wonder if it's "too much" of capacitance? But it's smalles of them and fit nicely. Voltage, current, start up time - all rock stable. Maybe because it is powered by 100VA trafo. So if it works for a week or 2 and no start problems - i can solder them for good? P.S. Somehow Nichicon KZ despite all my "audiophile hopes" didn't perform as well to my ears here  - less bass depth (or highlighter mid/treble?) and overall sound became a bit less transparent, more "confused" and less dynamic. I guess it just doesn't work as well at high frequencies as FR do despite excelent performance in audio band... Edited by user Tuesday, June 23, 2015 3:18:31 PM(UTC)
