How clean and stable does the external power supply for the Buffalo IIISE need to be since there are local shunt regulators on the board itself? Is a classic CLCLC filter possible or is regulators mandatory?

Basically, the cleaner the better, but as you mention, since the Tridents are local, it's not critical to have a super-clean supply.

That said, you definitely want a regulated supply.
