Hello, I have an AK4396 DAC board without the output stage. Instead I routed the + and - output from the dac chip to an capacitor coupled symmetrical Pass B1 Buffer and an balanced relais volume control. From there I go to my Aleph 5 clones and that works very well (no or in one channel very little hum). Now to my problem: I wanted to have a balanced to unbalanced converter for my headphone amp and a subwoofer filter, but I can't get one working. I tried several schematics and all have huge hum. When I go from the output of my volume board to the input of the simple OP amp output stage from my DAC board I get a very distorting sound. My question is: Can I install the Ivy board in my setup so, that I change the volume with my volume board and have the balanced and the unbalanced output simultanously? Should work fine - use 2K input resistors and set it up as if you where using Opus/WM8741
|

Thanks very much for your answer Russ. Where should I install my balanced relais volume board ? If I install it directly after the dac chip, I think I need capacitors, otherwise I might get klicks and plops, because of the dc voltage coming out of the + and - outs from the AK4396. So it might be better to have the volume control at the output of ivy instead of the 22 Ohm output resistors and get the signal for the balanced/unbalanced chip from the output of the volume board. The only worries that I have with the last solution is, that I totaly ruin the low output impedance of ivy and might need my B1 buffer after the volume board. Not a very bad solution, but not very elegant.

Hmmmm... What is the output impedance of your volume (balanced attenuator?) board?

Hello, thanks for your replies. the output impedance of my balanced attenuator is between 1MOhm and 4KOhm and the input impedance is between 1MOhm and 10KOhm

That is a very high output impedance!
Its far to high to put before the IVY-III - your only choice would be to put it after.
