I've searched around the internet and on this forum and can't find a definitive answer so I'll post my question here:

I have a Buffalo IIISE.

I would like to be able to switch between multiple (four for now) digital inputs: 2x SPDIF, I2S, DSD

What's the preferred way to do this?

Do I need two OTTO IIs?

Do I need to use an Arduino? If I use one, how would it work?

If I wanted to use a rotary switch, how would I wire this up?

1. Hard to tell. I2S and DSD aren't standard interfaces for consumer electronics. Besides, they are formats, you could run both over a single input. So the real question is what you're going to do in terms of usage of connectors.
2. At least one is needed for the SPDIF inputs.
3. If you have to ask this I doubt you are ready for it, but you switch IP_S and the OTTO with 2 digital outputs, one for each. It's all software, so you really need to know a little about programming and about electronics.
4. You could use the 2-bit Selector board. This uses 2 digital inputs. For you I think I would look at a more hardwired solution however.

The I2S input is coming from a USB-I2S interface.
DSD is coming from a SACD player via Teleporter module.
1 SPDIF is coming from my TV via TOSLINK
1 SPDIF is coming from my CD player via coax.

I have very good programming skills and basic electronics skills so I should be able to figure out how an Arduino solution if I were to go that route. I've just started to read about it.

I'm just not sure, if I were to go with a hardwired solution, how I would connect a switch to select between these 4 inputs. If I use two OTTO IIs, I'll need a switch that can control these as well as the IP_S pin.

With 2 Otto's and the IP_S to operate your easiest way to do this will be controller based. Look at http://hifiduino.wordpress.com/code/ for an Arduino based setup, and adapt the code according to your needs.

If you use two OTTO's, you can use a 3-deck 4-position rotary switch.


This would yield:

Position 1: S/PDIF 1
Position 2: S/PDIF 2 (TOSLINK)
Position 3: I2S
Position 4: DSD

Hello,

I have similair questions since I am starting to get lost. I want to order Buffalo III se. I will have I2S input coming from USB-I2S Amanero board. Now I want to have additional 1 or 2 SPDIF inputs. So If I want to have two SPDIF inputs, I imagine I need 4-Channel S/PDIF (or AES-EBU) Level Converter Kit and the selector. But they are noted only on the "non se" version. I know I need I/V stage plus the PSUs but other things I can figure out

To cut the story short will it work without any programming or change to buy:
1x Buffalo IIIse
1x 4-Channel S/PDIF (or AES-EBU)
1x 4-Input Selection Switch Kit


To have 1 I2S and 4 SPDIF inputs. If not what do I need more, If yes am I missing on what I need to do more???

The Buffalo-IIISE has one I2S/DSD input (D1,D2,DCK,GND) and one S/PDIF input. You can switch between them using the IP_S pin header.

If you want to add multiple S/PDIF inputs, you need a digital mux of some sort to select from one of the inputs to feed the single S/PDIF input.

We have two options for this: OTTO-II and the new 4:1 Mux/Demux (see pic).

The two modules you mentioned don;t actually do any switching, but are designed to utilize the MUX built into the ES9018 chip. The 4-channel S/PDIF level converter converts consumer-level S/PDIF to TTL-level, all at the same time. (The B-IIIse has this level conversion built in for it's single input.) The switch kit tells the DAC which input to use.

(Incidentally, the switch kit it also used with our 4:1 S/PDIF Mux module, as well as the new 4:1 Mux/Demux.)

The OTTO-II can switch between 2 sources (but up to 4 channels), and the 4:1 Mux/Demux can switch between 4 sources (single channel).

If you have two S/PDIF sources, you could use either of these modules.

The 4:1 Mux/Demux (man, we need a better name for it Think ) will be available for sale later this week, once I complete testing.

Hello Brian,

thanks for the answer. Man, I was reading it three times and still do not have a clue. Must be getting old. What I liked about your level conversion kit is that it is transformer coupled and isolates the SPDIF source from the DAC. I would really like to have that if I can.

With this in mind, can you just do a list for a blunted guy like me what do I need. I do not mind waiting for the new mux/demux if this is the way to go. So 1 I2S input and 2 SPDIF, what is needed apart from Buffalo III Se?
