Can i use a trident instead of the v-ref mod which i have installed on my Buffalo 1.0 ?

Yes, as long as you know what you're doing.

If it's a generation-1 Trident, remember not to feed it more than 5.2V.

It a project I still have to find time to do - but it's for sure on the list.

I would use an AVCC if you are going to go to the trouble. I will post some notes on how to do this in the next day or two.
