Hi guys.

On BIII Dual Mono with Hifiduino controller setup, is it neccesary to put a jumper on R7?. In affirmative case, in both boards?

Thanks & Regards

Hi Amaro,
I have similar configuration as you (Amanero - Sidecard - BIII Dual Mono controlled by HiFiduino), and didn't placed jumper on R7 @Right board due to difficulties to reach it under Trident Reg. Everything is working fine and unless Brian suggest different I wouldn't bother.
Brian maybe you could shed some light on this? What is port expander section of ES9018 used for anyway? And why is suggested in Dual Mono config to disable it only on the Right Board?
cheers

Russ have replied on rolle of port expander in another topic (DSD problem on Double Mono Config):
" The port expander is used to get the state of the switches for configuration. Only one can be active at a time or they would conflict. You install R7 so as to make one of the port expanders idle. This simply changes it's I2C address so it does not respond." Thank's Russ......

This make me think that in the case of external controller like HifiDuino we may need to place R7 on both boards in order to have full control over registers on Left as well Right BIII?
Any one else out there with BIIIx2 mono willing to share opinion......

cheers
Danny

No, placing R7 on both boards would give them both the same I2C address, and cause a conflict. You woudl want one mounted and one not mounted.

The job of the port expander is only to interface between the firmware and the dip switches. If you ignore it in your code, it will have no effect at all. Alternatively, you could use it if having a bunch of dip switches would help in your application.

I have a dual mono BIII with single Legato using Arduino. I used HiFiDuino code and now use CE-Designs code as I use his shield on my Arduino. CE-Designs code is based on HiFiDuino code; Corpius is a programmer or has programming experience, and made some nice upgrades to the code. Anyway, I followed the manual and put a jumper on the address header of my right BIII board and also jumpered R7. No jumper on left board. Works fine.

I saw your other posts. I also have a Sidecar with 4 channel input board. I have an OTTO II connected to Sidecar that switches between two inputs; a USB and TP Teleporter that connects to either a modded Denon that exports I2S or DSD or a SB Touch modded for I2S out. I didn't use another OTTO II to correct DSD input mapping for dual mono and went my own way rather than change my existing setup.

Brian,
Thank's on clarifying R7 role. Would it be correct to say that R7 set I2C address (L board R board) and in the scenario like my one I don't need to worry about it? Also if I am correct, unsoldering L5 will disable port expander (made it redundant )! and this would be more preferable option when using ARDUINO (less chance of having interference between code and switches)?

Rich,
Unfortunately CE-Desing doesn't offer any more of shields so I have to stick with HiFiDuino cabling nightmare...
I have try you implementation with relays, however due to using different setup (full ribbon cable use) it get twice complicated (still managed with only two relays controlled with Amanero dsd pin-will post schematic soon).
Since D1 on side card is connected to D5 and D2 to D6, I have to do the same "mod" on those wires as well. It does work well, however there is small "lag" and hiccups (high pitch tone sometimes) when switching from/to PCM and DSD.
Only wish guys from TP have more willingness/time to support this kind of configuration and develop a new "3 input sidecard" (2xI2S+1XSPDIF) having all this futures build in already.

Brian, Russ, common guys move away from redundant SPDIF(in 2008 SPDIF was the only choice) and give us new I2S/DSD input interface for BIII.........
cheers
Danny
btw it is shame that such excellent product such BIII is, wasn't complemented with equally excellent easy to connect/implement front interface (combo of HiFiDuino controller + Amanero USB+8channel MUX)!
cheers
Danny

Hi Danny. I understand your situation now. Maybe inquire over at diyaudio and see if anyone has a shield and wants to get rid of it.
