Hi Russ & Brian.
In the BIII 8Ch product page, the last item is BIII Firmware update.
I think IF this update is MANDATORY for correct function, YOU must send chip with correct sofware without any charge. Any other option is very hard to urderstand. I think you do not need to remember the price of Buffalo.
Best regards.
Antonio.

It's not really mandatory. There is a bug that can (sometimes) lead to a mis-mapping of internal DACs if you use I2S and the software remapping for stereo instead of installing the input jumpers. This is the result of either a quirk in ES9018 and how it deals with default register settings, and the order in which the registers are set. It does not always occur, but sometimes does, so we have a new version of firmware the prevents it from ever happening. Basically, you might get three (3) internal DACs assigned to each channel, rather than four. If you are using S/PDIF inputs, or have installed the remapping jumpers, you don't need the firmware update. If you need at, you can either download it for free or order a new chip ($0 + shipping). EDIT: It also affects Mono implementations, not just Stereo Edited by user Tuesday, April 2, 2013 4:11:42 PM(UTC)

In my case, I have assembled three Dac for my friends. All Dac are doble mono configuration and only use I2S/DSD signals. I remap inputs the same way like BII.
I need change firmware?
Is it possible to reuse the chips?
Regards

Regards Yes, mono implementations are affected if you are using the software remapping feature rather than jumpers. You can reuse the chips. If you have an Atmel programmer (such as the AVR Dragon), you can program the chips yourself using the downloadable HEX file. Or, you can get new ones from us and use the ones you have for another project.

-6dB in output compared to an identical signal via S/PDIF.
