I have gone with him through the integration guide and checked all settings/configs for his setup. All seems to be according to the recommended stereo configuration with the B-III plus Sidecar and 4 way SPDIF board. Still he says SPDIF sounds much louder (2x) than I2S or DSD. Changing SW2 switch #8 seems to have no effect whether it is changed with music playing or changed and then power cycle the DAC. Should channel remaping on/off change increase or decrease output level?
I'm not in the same place (in fact I'm 650+ Km away) so I can't help testing, just translate and, for sake of speed, speak to him over the phone.
Cheers
Javier Thanks for help Javier.

Brian, he is using a WaveIO card as one of the sources, the other being a CEC transport.
The WaveIO can output simultaneously I2S and SPDIF on either isolated or non isolated outputs but in all cases the source PC and player would be exactly the same when using this adapter as source.

WaveIO only used isolated S/PDIF output and I2S output, is the way I eard differences between I2S & S/PDIF volume. Edited by user Thursday, January 3, 2013 2:05:18 PM(UTC)

It sounds like either there is something wrong with the wiring around the controller that goes to the port expander (the other IC close to the controller) inputs - or the port expander itself has been damaged.
The reason I say this is that the controller must be working or the volume control would not work, yet flipping the switches seems to have no effect.
For example when you set the SPDIF AUTODETECT DISABLE switch then the DAC should not lock onto SPDIF at all.
In the same way - I don't think the input remapping switch is having any effect - and thus the lower output from PCM/I2S.

Russ, the Tridents were soldered to the board by Brian when Felipe sent it back to you due to power issues some time ago, so access to anything beneath them is not possible without unsoldering them. Is there any easy way to test the port expander or will it be absolutely necessary to remove at least the blocking Trident?
Cheers

I would start by removing any external wiring around the controller and only using the DIP switches. See if that resolves things. if it does not then it is time to dig deeper, which may indeed mean removing that trident. But try the simpler approach first.

One other thing to test is selecting a different SPDIF source (say # 2) with no input while leaving SPDIF input 1 connected to a live SPDIF input. If the port expander is working correctly you should get no lock when source 2(or any other unconnected source) is selected, but a good lock when source 1 is selected.
