After having build the Buffalo-DAC III in Stereo with Browskie's Unbalancer as Output and WaveIO as input, I decided to "upgrade" to Dual Mono. (Needless to say that the stereo combo is byfar the best DAC ever in my setup, easily kills the big Accuphases and others).

I used the sofar used Stereo Board as left channel and switched the DIP-Switch to Dual-Mono. Nothing else changed on the left board

I followed Leon's Guide to setup the right Mono-Board (plus put the Digital-Input-Jumpers in place as described under first steps). Connected with I2C. The OUtputs are Bridged to feed the Unbalancer (so Right+ and Left- goes into the + of the Right channel and Right-and Left+ into the . of the right channel and left channel vice versa). I want to have the extra current so that I can lower the i/v-resistor from currently 50 ohms to 20 ohms.

result so far: The Left channel works, the right is dead quiet. The LED of the right DAC-Board shows as well "mute" even when Music is playing.

I checked now various things, but got stuck...could you give me somme advise what to check and how to nail this down ?

Best Regards

Frank

Pictures would help us to see if there is something wrong.

How have you wired the input?

Did you use the address header on the right channel? Also did you jumper R7?

Here you go...

In terms of your questions:

R7-Jumper has been implemented, The jumper for the adress header as well.

On the right board, I followed the same steps as on the left board for the under the boards jumpers:
In place:
 JPCM1 (JPCM1, 3)
 JPCM2 (JPCM2, 1)
 JPCM3 (JPCM3, 2)
And remove jumpers if present from:
 JDSD1 (JDSD1, 5)
 JDSD2 (JDSD2, 4)

Other than that, the only connection for input of the right channel are the three cables I2C from the left board.

Thanks for your fast response by the way !!! Highly appreciated.

Is the kapton film still on the switches? Remember they came from the factory all switched "on" not "off"

??? The upper noard is the right board (no controller) and if I understood correctly, the switches on the right board are not enabled / relevant, I did not change any of these.

The left board worked already flawless in stereo (so, I needed to switch most of the switches as you say), I only changed the switch from stereo to dual mono).

All of the DIP switches appear to be ON. You need to change them to OFF.

Please see the switches of the Left channel. The switches of the right channel I thought have no function ?

From the Integration guide:

"Only a DAC board with both the firmware controller and L5 in place and R7 not shorted will respond to the
DIP switches."

Which is for the right board not the case, so why should I do anything with the switches of the right channel ?

Just to understand how it should work: If music plays from the left channel, I assume the "Mute" LED on the right channel should not be on, right ? So the issue shoudl be in the transfer per I2C or the switches ? Are the jumpers on the right board right or should the jumpers

JPCM1 (JPCM1, 3)
 JPCM2 (JPCM2, 1)
 JPCM3 (JPCM3, 2)

for the right channel NOT be in place ?

As you see from the two latest photos:

SW1 (in the left board with the controller): All switches are off.
SW2: All off, except SW 3 on (Dual Mono) and Sw 5 (No SPDIF Autodetect)

You must place the jumpers JPCM on the two boards.

You must also connect the input signal in both boards.

In your first pick, I can see clearly that you only feed signal on the botton board.

Just in case that Leon was wrong, I tried to switch the DIPs off on the right channel - did not do anything.

By the way: I have now a strong hum in the system as well.

The right board is NOT having a connection currently to the star ground of the Unbalancer as is is already connect to the ground thhrough the I2C connection and the left board...maybe it should as well its own analog ground connection ?

Really ? This is I2S !!! I though the I2S goes only --> Left board with Controller which will then pass the right signal ---> I2C ----> to right board ?

So you say it needs I2S from WaveIO in parallel to both boards ? What is I2C than doing (I have no clue what it actually does, I thought it passed the data stream)...There is no IC-Controller on the right board !!! This is not a setup where both boards work in parallel (stereo)...

I will for sure follow your advise, but before damaging anything, forgive me to ask back before.

You have no PCM signal gong to the right DAC. :) Yes you should connect analog ground to the output stage.

i2S is not I2C :) Best advice is to Google it. :)

Also, just to make your life easier, it is much easier to set the switches if you pull the kapton film tape off them :) It is there only to protect the switches during the solder reflow process.

Also... I would suggest putting your left channel on top of the stack - since it is the one with the active controller. That way you can more easily get to the switches etc.

Yes, that is.

I2C is only for chip configuration. In dual-mono, only one controller is neccesary. The controller communicates with the two chip through the I2C bus.

OK, guys...made the changes as required and we have now full signal on both channels....thanks for the prompt support....

...I can't judge the music yet as I have too much hum currently. No idea yet why this hum is now there. I am using now 2 Placid HD instead of one. They are not connected except through the star ground of the analog outputs to the unbalanceer star ground. They go back to individual coils. Any hints how to wire the two placids HD ?

Thanks a lot for your support, guys !!!! Reall great to have such a community !
