Hello, I'm shortly to embark upon a Buffalo project.
It will be stereo only.
My main input source will be one of the high-res USB decoders, feeding I2S into the Buffalo.
But I also want one coaxial s/pdif input, and one optical s/pdif input.

I've decided to go with software-control of the Buffalo (that's another story) and given this:

Q1. am I right in thinking that the most straightforward solution to switching between my 3 inputs would be to connect them to separate input-pins of the Buffalo (DATA2, DATA3, DATA4) and use software control to swtich between them?

This avoids the need to buy any external switching modules such as the Sidecar or Otto, yes?

Q2. I understand for the coaxial s/pdif I need to buy a level converter kit,
but for the optical s/pdif input, am I correct that with the appropriate toslink module, its TTL output can go direct to the ES9018?

1. I think the most straightforward way woud be to use the Sidecar module and to trigger it with the microcontroller.
2. Yes, but please beware that your module likely includes a voltage divider, which means it no longer outputs TTL.

The TOSLINK receiver module from TwistedPear outputs true TTL?

That is the old module, the new version includes 2 extra resistors, it's extremely likely those form a voltage divider as Russ stated he would add that. It would be nice however it Russ or Brian confirmed it, so I can update the guide with the new information.

Yes, on the new module that is a voltage divider. RS is the series part, RP the parallel part(to GND).

The additional resistors are optional. This lets you choose TTL or "consumer-level" output voltage.
